Pan Balance Activity The goal of this activity is to develop an understanding of how to use manipulatives to support student development of the concept of equivalence - an important foundation for algebraic thinking. After you have explored the three pan balance activities, add a screenshot of your work from each activity in the space provided. Pan Balance - Shape Pan Balance - Numbers Pan Balance - Expressions RESPOND: Answer the reflective questions below.
1. As you worked through the activities, what did you notice about the progression of skill as it related to each activity? As I worked through each of the activities, I noticed that the progression of skill increased when I implemented greater values or more variables into the expressions. For instance, when I was working through the shapes, I was able to determine the weight of each quickly. However, I would put more shapes on one side of the scale and less on the other just to prove that a singular shape weighed the same amount as multiple shapes. When I was working through the numbers, I found that adding more numbers or variables made the problem more advanced and required more skill to make the equations equal. 2. How would you incorporate these activities into your classroom? In what part of the lesson sequence would using these types of representations be most appropriate? In my classroom, I would incorporate these strategies by using the number strategy. I will have my students create different number variations and equations equal. They will make them equal by using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Using these types of representations will be most appropriate after learning the types of equations and where/when to use them. I would use these strategies as more of a review for my students before they take a quiz or test. Not only will it review their knowledge, it will also test them and allow them to progress their skills and abilities to solve different problems.
