Assignment #3 25 marks Answer the following questions. the assignment is due on Thursday, Dec 7 th /2023 WHMIS ( 5 marks) What responsibilities do workers have under WHMIS? List 2 1. Participating in the WHMIS education and training programs provided by their employer. 2. Take necessary steps to protect themselves and their co-workers and participate in identifying and controlling hazards. How many categories does an SDS have? - SDS have 4 categories divided into sixteen sections . What information is on the Supplier label? List 3 1. Product identifier – the brand name, chemical name, common name, generic name or trade name of the hazardous product. 2. Pictogram (s) – hazard symbol within a red. 3. Initial supplier identifier – the name, address and telephone number of either the Canadian manufacturer or the Canadian importer*. - You are preparing to work with a new hazardous material. You need to know what personal protective equipment to wear. Where would find that? List 3 1. Canada.ca: This website provides a quick facts sheet on PPE, including information on selecting, using, and maintaining PPE, as well as training requirements for employees. 2. CCOHS: The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety provides information on designing an effective PPE program, including examples of PPE such as respirators, gloves, aprons, fall protection, and full body suits, as well as head, eye, and foot protection. 3. NIOSH: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health provides information on PPE, including respirators, eye protection, hearing protection, and protective clothing. 1
How can hazardous materials enter the body? List 3 1. Ingestion: Inadvertently swallowing hazardous materials. 2. Inhalation: Breathing in hazardous fumes. 3. Absorption: Occurs when hazardous material enters the body through the skin or an open wound. Noise (5 marks) There are three machine noise sources in a department. Machine A 118 dBa Machine B 118 dBa Machine C 118 dBa The supervisor provided ear plugs with NRR 32. Numerical differences Levels Amount to be added 0 – 1 3 2 – 4 2 5– 9 1 >10 0 Answer the following questions using the information provided (show all calculations) 1) Is the ear plug effective to work for 8 hours? Why? a) Yes, the ear plug will not be safe or effected to work because the effective noise reduction provided by the ear plugs is 23 dBa. According to OSHA, hearing protection is required for all employees at exposure to 85 or more decibels of sound over an 8-hour period. Since the noise levels of the machines are 118 dBa, the effective noise reduction provided by the ear plugs is 23 dBa, and the maximum exposure limit is 85 dBa, the ear plugs are effective to work for 8 hours. Therefore, the ear plugs provided by the supervisor are effective to work for 8 hours. 2) After using the ear plug, the worker can work for? (maximum time) 2
b) The maximum time a worker can work after using the ear plugs is approximately 7.74 minutes. 3) After using the ear plug, If the worker is standing 2 meters away from machines, what will be the distance that will allow the worker to work for 8 hours? c) The distance that will allow the worker to work for 8 hours is approximately 1584.89 meters. For the following photo describe the followings: (5 marks) Describe the hazard, what is wrong? SAFETY HAZARD and the man is not following proper safety protocols, which is putting him at risk of injury as he is wearing gloves and wearing full sleeves shirt or not rolled up. To prevent accidents, it is important to follow safety guidelines when working with machine. 1. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection. What would be the engineering control to prevent this accident? 1. Installing safety guards and shields to prevent access to moving parts and machine guards and local exhaust ventilation. 2. Installing emergency stop buttons and other safety devices to shut down the machine in case of an emergency. Mention one advantage and disadvantage of the control you choose. 3
