6-1 Assignment: Modern Day Robotics

In this world technology is growing at a rapid pace and so is the grasp of knowledge of
those systems. We as humans love to make life as easy as possible for ourselves and the way we
are able to accomplish that is by the involvement of robotics and the advancements it brings. The
way robotics helps with that is we can program these AI robots to be able to perform simple tasks
to improve the quality of life. We are now going to talk about three different projects that are in
the works and see what purpose they have as well as the capabilities that they hold.
Let’s first start with the “Asimo” project that is being developed by Honda. This AI was
developed for testing and trying to understand what limits technology has to advanced humanoid
based robots. This project never had one primary function but instead was programmed to handle
a multitude of functions in order to get it as close to a human as possible. This robot is able to
walk around and navigate paths through ultrasonic sensors, laser detection, and multiple controls
to stay stable while walking. Not only can it navigate but it can also recognize simple gestures
like reacting to an extended hand by offering a handshake. It can also wave back to a human if
they have at Asimo. Another thing it is able to accomplish due to the degree of freedom that the
Asimo hands have is performing tasks like pouring a drink and carrying it without spilling a
drop. Sadly, the development of this project was ceased in 2018, its achievements are still being
used in the production of other robots to this day.
Now let’s take a look into what Boston Dynamics developed. The robot I am going to be
talking about is the “Spot Classic”. This robot or a variation of this robot is being used right now
in the militaries battle fields. The primary purpose of this thing is to carry equipment, supplies,
and personnel through the battlefield. This robot is equipped with four hydraulic powered legs
due to having to traverse different types of terrain indoors and outdoors. The robot has many
different sensors and systems to control all of its movements and balance it for any navigation. It

Problem 1: You are working in a consulting company that does a lot of hand calculations for designs in
Aerospace Industry for mechanical, thermal, and fluidic systems. You took the Virtual engineering
course, and you want to convince your boss and the team you work to move to modelling and simulation
in computers using a certain software (Ansys, Abaqus, etc). Discuss the benefits and pitfalls of computer
based models used within an industrial environment to solve problems in engineering.

Problem:
Insufferable Enlightenment era scientists are a lot like insufferable frat boys/sorority girls - they just cannot
get enough of themselves.
One of the most well-known "big brain" contests in their history was a Europe-wide challenge presented by a
certain Swiss scientist called Johann Bernoulli (who already had his own solution so that he could pompously
show off once the submissions came in). He asked the "leading minds of the world" the following:
What is the curve along which a particle, under constant gravitational acceleration g, would descend from
one arbitrary point to another within the fastest duration of time?
Fancily called the brachistochrone problem (derived from the Greek word for just "shortest time"), Bernoulli's
initial solution used the law of refraction as the result of applying the principle of least time to a light particle.
Let's give this solution a shot ourselves.
(a) Consider an initial point of (xo, 0), both parameterised by time t. Our goal is to…

Task 1
You are employed as a mechanical engineer within an unnamed research center, specializing in the
development of innovative air conditioning systems. Your division is tasked with providing computer-based
modeling and design solutions using computational fluid dynamics through ANSYS software. Your primary
responsibilities involve the analysis of horizontal channel dynamics to meet specific criteria. Under the
guidance of your immediate supervisor, you have been assigned unique responsibilities within an ongoing
project. As a member of the research team, your role includes constructing an appropriate model and
executing a sequence of simulation iterations to explore and enhance channel performance. Figure 1
provides a visualization of the horizontal channel under consideration. Consider 2D, incompressible, steady
flow in a horizontal channel at a Reynolds number of 150. The schematic below illustrates the channel flow,
not drawn to scale. For simplicity, neglect gravity. The…

Management at GSI, Inc. has assured him that they are committed to maintaining a safe workplace. They have never had an individual dedicated to this task full-time. They will implement his recommendations if he can justify them.
As Jeff begins to get familiar with the operations, he spends considerable time on the production floor. He notices workers clean their tools before break with a liquid from an unmarked 55-gallon drum. They also use this liquid to clean residue from their skin. They use paper towels to dry their tools and hands, throw these towels in the trash, and head to the break room for a snack and/or smoke.

1.
David Aquino, engineering director, started out the day uptight. His young child
had the flu the night before, and he had been up all night to help. Upon arrival at his
office, David had to make urgent phone calls to approve a two-week overtime work plan
due to a plant fire the night before and to plan for a product committee meeting the next
day to counter environmental concerns about a wastewater treatment plant.
Then he spent 30 minutes reviewing the qualifications of new candidates and
decided on one. He asked for salary information and wanted to examine the offer before
it was sent. He asked for further justification for the budget requested by industrial
engineering for a minicomputer. Without reading it, he approved the research proposal
from material engineering. He rejected an invitation to speak at a regional meeting of the
Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers by giving an untrue reason.

You are a biomedical engineer working for a small orthopaedic firm that fabricates rectangular shaped fracture
fixation plates from titanium alloy (model = "Ti Fix-It") materials. A recent clinical report documents some problems with the plates
implanted into fractured limbs. Specifically, some plates have become permanently bent while patients are in rehab and doing partial
weight bearing activities.
Your boss asks you to review the technical report that was generated by the previous test engineer (whose job you now have!) and used to
verify the design. The brief report states the following... "Ti Fix-It plates were manufactured from Ti-6Al-4V (grade 5) and machined into
solid 150 mm long beams with a 4 mm thick and 15 mm wide cross section. Each Ti Fix-It plate was loaded in equilibrium in a 4-point bending
test (set-up configuration is provided in drawing below), with an applied load of 1000N. The maximum stress in this set-up was less than the
yield stress for the Ti-6Al-4V…

Your car is equipped with a fan blower setting that allow you to choose between speeds 0, 1,2 and 3. 2. In studying for your CBEMS 125B exam, you get hungry and decide to boil some
water in a pot to make instant noodles. You put your aluminum spoon, with a long handle
(i.e. good to use "long fin approximation"), in the pot in anticipation of stirring the
noodles into the boiling water. However, your phone rings, and you leave the spoon in
the boiling water on the stove for quite a while (i.e. the system reaches steady-state
conditions) before you come back to it. The boiling water is at 100°C and room
temperature is 25°C. The spoon has a square handle that is 0.6 cm per side. At a handle
height of 8 cm, the temperature of the long aluminum spoon is 62°C. The Royal Society
for the Prevention of Accidents lists a maximum surface temperature of 58°C as a "safe"
touchable temperature for metals. Is the spoon safe to pick up at a handle height of 12 cm?
Justify your answer with calculations.
Assume (1) No radiation effect, (2) convection heat transfer coefficient is uniform in the
pot…
