Assignment: Now that you have learned about the features of various types of hearing aids, visit the Phonak website. Find a hearing aid that would be recommended for children and describe its special features, especially those advantageous to children. I have chosen to concentrate on the Sky Marvel-SP series of hearing aids, which are designed for individuals with moderate to profound hearing loss (Phonak: Sky M-SP,n.p). The hearing aid's long battery life, resistance to dust and water, and tamper-proof ear hook are some of its unique features that I believe are worth mentioning (Phonak:Sky M-SP,n.d). Seeing that children typically have active lives, water resistance and a high battery life of 10 hours are the greatest benefits of this hearing aid for kids. The tamperproof ear hook and rechargeable battery choice are wonderful advantage as well because children are prone to making mistakes due to their constant experimentation during development. 2. Select one ALD for this pediatric patient and explained how it would be coupled/connected to the hearing aid(s). The one ALD I decided to choose for this pediatric patient is Bluetooth but, more specifically focusing on the Roger On™ . According to the Roger On™ User’s Guide, you first have to make sure both the Roger On™ and the Sky Marvel-SP hearing aid is on. Then you, “press the connect button on the backside of your Roger On ™”. Finally, you “hold your Roger On close to the hearing aid…” until it connects (Phonak: Roger On™ User Guide, p. 38, 2021) - 2A. Could this ALD also be used with a cochlear implant? Yes, the Roger On™ is compatible with “almost any hearing aid or cochlear implant” but, requires a separate receiver such as the Roger NeckLoop, Roger Direct™ , and the Roger X. (Phonak: Roger On™ Overview, n.d.) 3. Explain how use of this ALD could improve communication for this pediatric patient. The use of this ALD could definitely improve communication for this pediatric patient. For example a notable feature is left and right speech identification. This feature will help the pediatric patient feel more engaged in the conversation. It also works well with background noise as it “helps support conversations by automatically selecting the person who is talking. (Phonak: Roger On™ Overview, n.d.) How would these features be of particular benefit in a bimodal or bilateral condition (compared to a unilateral fitting)? Be sure to explain why these are particularly benefit when a patient is fit in both ears, not just one. In a bimodal or bilateral condition, where the individual is fitted with hearing aids in both ears, these features become even more beneficial compared to a unilateral fitting. With hearing aids in both ears, the brain receives input from both sides, facilitating better localization of sound, improved speech understanding in noisy environments, and a more balanced auditory experience overall.
