Module 2 Question Set
1.
What is a normative basis? Why is it so difficult for us to follow a normative basis? What is the role of sin in this from
the perspective of Christian Theology?
A normative basis is something that gives an idea as to who we should become as a person as well as how we should act. Basically, who we should be and what we should do. It is the ethical decisions that we decide to make which will determine who we are as a person. Following this further, normative basis is best described as what is morally right or wrong. In addition, normative basis can be difficult to follow because everyone has different values, goals, characteristics, virtues, etc... that makes them who they are. Not everyone has the same beliefs or values, so people have to learn outside of normative basis “rules” to be open-minded and non-
judgmental because someone else’s beliefs/values can be very different from your own. What you feel might be right or wrong in certain situations someone else can think the exact opposite therefore normative basis can be difficult to follow entirely. Lastly, the role of sin in this from the perspective of Christian Theology is that since it is what is morally right or wrong, this is the belief and practice of Christians. Since people tend to follow their own rules and beliefs outside of normative basis it would be considered a sin in the case of Christian theology. 2.
Explain the steps of discernment discussed in the chapter. Why is it important to take such deliberate steps in thinking
through a moral issue?
The steps of discernment include personal reflection or self-
knowledge, which helps us understand our own beliefs, desires, values, experiences, etc. Being honest with ourselves and going about life the way we feel is right or wrong will help us create an image of ourselves and who we are becoming in Gods eyes. Next, is contextual analysis which helps us recognize the morally relevant features of certain situations so we can know how to go about the situation. Lastly, critical evaluation is the internal and external thought that come with planning on whether it is morally right or wrong in certain situations. During the critical evaluation point in discernment a good moral choice will be made which will help lead to beautiful human flourishing for yourself and others. Following this further, it is important to take these steps when going through a moral issue because this process helps you figure out yourself and your own beliefs as well as who God is calling you to be in this world and as a person. 3.
Thinking about each of the core values for Mercy Health Partners, give at least one concrete practical example of
how you could live out each of the core values in your work. (6 examples total)
Mercy Health Partners core values include the following: I would display compassion
in my work by listening to a patient who may have just recently been diagnosed with cancer. I would be empathetic and use therapeutic communication and active listening to display compassion towards the patient during a huge change in their life. Following the further, I would display excellence in my work by always displaying a wiliness to learn, as well as accepting criticism and advice to improve my quality of work in the nursing field. I will also always go above and beyond for my patients and make sure that they are taken care of as if they were my
own family while under my care. Next, I will display human dignity by treating every individual in and out of work with complete respect. If I have a
patient who does not have the same beliefs as myself of has no respect towards me because of my characteristics, beliefs, ect I will treat that patient
no different. I will respect every individual that I encounter and respect them fully as well as try to make sure that I understand their religion and beliefs when providing care for them. In addition, I could display justice
by advocating for patients while at work who are not being provided the care that they deserve. If I see a nurse, doctor, aid, etc. neglecting, or harming a patient it is my duty to report that negligence and get justice for that patient who may not be able to advocate for themselves at that time. Moreover, the sacredness of life could be displayed at work by caring for an elderly hospice patient and checking their vitals, providing complete care and comfort for a patient who unfortunately has no control over their life now. Therefore, it is my duty to treat this patient with the utmost human compassion while paying attention to the patients’ spiritual needs as well. Lastly, service would be displayed every single day while working as a nurse because it would be my job to care for those in need. Nurses are the patients’ first point of service/contact by checking vitals, administering treatment/medications while carefully monitoring the patient’s status and coordinating/serving the responses from the rest of the patient’s care team. 4.
