Mateo 1 Allen Mateo PHL105.921 Introduction to Ethics Lavern Wiebe Applied Ethics Paper December 11, 2022 Pollution and Its Effects Destruction and chaos. The horrors of pollution and the effects it has on the world are extremely prevalent. It affects not only those that inhabit it such as people and animals but also the Earth itself. Without proper care of Earth, the world could go array. It will also cause political and economical distress, as not only will leaders have to rush to solve the ethical issues within pollution, but it could also hurt the resources the world has. It could cause much turmoil between nations and unrest is realistic. The reason why pollution could cause ethical issues is because of health issues, global warming, and hurts ecosystems. Pollution brings a huge health risk to people on Earth. It can affect so much within a person's health and well-being. Without healthy people available to function, it provides many concerns within the workforce and economic stability. Companies would have less money to make due to work force and political leaders would have to find reforms to solve the lack of people working. There would also have to be more investment into scientists figuring out the problems of how pollution is causing problems in health people and trying to find ways to aid in improving their conditions. One of the forms of pollution that affect human health the most is fossil fuels. These include oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy. Oil and natural gas are fossil fuels that are used every day by the public. Vehicles and homes all use gas to aid in the day-to- day activities of people. However, carbon dioxide is a production from this greenhouse gas.
Mateo 2 Robert Dee states that the carbon dioxide from fossil fuels impacts children. Some of these impacts include impairment of behavioral development, respiratory illness, and cognitive development (Dee para.18). Dee continues to state that this ethical issue could cause communities to be less profitable and children to not be as strong with conditions (Dee para.18). Denver, Colorado is an example where an area that has heavy use of fossil fuels because of vehicle traffic is having issues with child health. Cancer and leukemia are a risk that is prevalent in Denver for children (Dee para.19). Children are the future and without them being able to learn healthily, the economic downturn is going to be extremely noticeable and lead to poverty. Without a workforce to properly develop, there will be no people working to solve this problem of pollution. Health issues outside of cancer persist with pollution. A study conducted by professors from MIT, Michigan, and Harvard found that there is a correlation between air pollution and off- putting behaviors across different regions of the world. Economic and violent crimes were results that were cited from the correlation (Galinsky para.4). Healthcare and housing conditions were also mentioned as relevant causes of these crimes (Galinsky para.4). Housing and lack of healthcare could cause those dealing with these problems to commit crimes because they might be able to afford their conditions. It is a real issue that is ethically flawed. This could also lead to poverty which will hurt economic growth and force political leaders to scramble for answers. Healthcare would certainly increase and probably be harder to obtain or afford. Global warming is another ethical issue that stems from pollution. This is something that directly affects Earth and can be detrimental in many different areas. The blanket of warmth that greenhouse gases provide (Vaughn p.386). Now while surface levels may colder without the use of greenhouse gases, there has been so much intake of greenhouse gases that Earth's increase in
Mateo 3 temperature is inevitable (Vaughn p.386). With surface levels increasing in temperature, that directly affects communities and individuals who live in certain areas. It has gotten extremely alarming that scientists are indicating that sea levels will rise globally; oceans will be warmer; flooding, flooding on the coast, and heavy rain are all factors of global warming (Vaughn p.383). This is all due to the unregulated use of greenhouse gases. Homes and entire communities could be wiped out due to the rise in sea levels. Millions will die and be left homeless without anywhere to go (Vaughn p.401). Environmental conditions like these will cause jobs to be lost and fewer people to provide in society. It is said that rich governments could enclose or constrain the number of greenhouse gases used (Vaughn p.402). While it is great that the rich could regulate this energy use, poor countries will not have the same opportunity. Smaller, poorer countries do not have the same capabilities or resources financially to control the use of greenhouse gases. These countries will perish, especially those closer to sea level, like Puerto Rico or Vietnam. Adaptation will be difficult for them; therefore, the harsh consequences of nature will be harder on them. People are left out in hunger, without homes, and struggling to survive. It is too late to prevent global warming, but several solutions could regulate and help in not adjusting as drastic as it will be. Suggestions include building seawalls and reinforcing homes that can withstand storms (Vaughn p.402). Seawalls and storm-resistant homes will aid those on the coast the most. They are directed by the water and having a barrier to the water can help. It can aid in preparing for storms and could provide a sense of security in case a storm does get bad; they know that their home will be protected due to its reinforcement. The only issue will be that those without financial capabilities may not be able to afford it. The government would have to step in and provide assurance with programs to aid these populations that are not capable
