Explain which alternative you would support to address the issues raised in the
Preliminary Problem Analysis for East Wallingford
Decision making is something that is at the very heart of public administration. Whenever there
is decision making, you hope that rational decision making is something that is happening as
well. “Decision-making by public officials drives programs and policies and has a significant
impact on the lives of citizens. Public sector decision-making can easily be influenced by
political factors, which make good decision practices even more important” (Morgan, 2019).
Decision making has to be something that comes with guidance and counseling from any people
to see which outcome will benefit everyone that is involved. The best place to look for guidance
is the Bible. The Bible says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of
counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14, ESV). Another Bible verse that comes to mind is,
“do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses
all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7,
ESV). No matter what type of decision that is going to be made, we need to turn to God for
guidance on what we need to decide because only God knows what is going to happen and why
it happens.
Be sure to fully explain why this alternative represents the most rational decision
In the beginning I was thinking about the street widening to be the best option for Wallingford
until I reflected on the potential outcome. I thought about the resources and infrastructure that
was already available, but you have to consider the economic cost that the businesses would have
with construction right in front. This would sway people to not go because no parking would be
available during time periods and there would be too much congestion during the period of
construction.
The Southway alternative is the most rational choice regardless of the cost it would take for the
project. I say this because it has the best long-term maintenance costs and reductions in the travel
time. “Federal highway money is available on a matching basis for highway construction, of
course, but at the public hearings, people in the major residential districts south of the city
opposed building a “Southway,” a 4-mile-long link from East Main Street to lower Nottingham
Road near the Interstate interchange (projected trip time: 6 minutes)” (Dresang, 2016). Even
though there are residential districts that are against this project, it provides the best outcome for
everyone within the city. The decision would be the most rational because it would benefit the
citizens in the long run by lowering the traveling time and would not congest the business’ until
the construction is complete.
