Day 1 - PNUR104 OLG- Critical Thinking, Problem Solving & Basic Needs Winter, 2021 Complete the following questions when doing your readings for class. Use your Potter & Perry or Kozier et al., text to support your learning. What is Critical Thinking - Complex phenomenon, defined as a process and set of skills. - The use of knowledge and reasoning to make accurate clinical judgements and decisions. - Requires purposeful & reflective reasoning to examine ideas, conclusions & actions within the context of the situation. - carefully choosing a direction - act of "thinking about thinking." - **systematic process to help make more informed decisions. - **skills of critical thinking can be learned. - process used to determine a course of action. - important for analysis & evaluation - uses previously learned information and new information. `What ways do Nurses use Critical Thinking ? **Nurses use critical thinking to make meaningful observations, create new information and to improve self-knowledge. Give examples for the following: a) When nurses would use knowledge from other disciplines, sources, subjects & fields e.g., nutrition, physiology, social work. Nurses would use knowledge from other sources like growth and development to critically think about the nutritious state of the patient. b) When a nurse would need to deal with change in stressful environments to quickly adapt to the situation. Eg Nurses would deal with change, within the emergency room ( ER) having an overload, dealing with patients rushing in due to certain accidents. Patients complaining and not complying. As a Nurse in that specific environment in order to adapt, you need to stay calm and relax, taking deep breaths and composing oneself. Take time to self care by having a healthy nutritious meal, and most important communicate with your patient, in order to assist the situation carefully. c) When a nurse would need to **use the skills of critical thinking to use relevant information**to help patient make important decisions. The nurse should take her/his time to explain to the patient the procedure that he/she will perform. For example, when you encounter a patient that is having a hard time walking on their own. You can approach them and ask if they want to use and/or if they want you to teach them to use an appropriate assistive device whether it is cane or a walker. Then together you can make a decision and by using the assistive device it can help lessen the pain and make them feel comfortable.
Examine the relationship between critical thinking, evidence informed knowledge and the clinical decision-making process. What is evidence Informed Knowledge? Evidence Informed Knowledged is a knowledge based on research or clinical expertise and this makes you an informed critical thinker and improves patient outcomes. Describe the Clinical Decision-making process. Clinical decision making requires good quality judgement and critical thinking. The clinical decision making process applies to certain skills to establish critical thinking practice. In the nursing profession we must include interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation, explanation and self regulation in our decision making process. 1. Interpretation - being able to understand collected data, look for any patterns and clarify anything uncertain 2. Analysis - observing data with an open mindset, avoid making assumptions 3. Inference - Form reasonable hypotheses and conclusions on the basis of the patterns observed. 4. Evaluation - Assess all situations objectively, use criteria to determine the effectiveness of nursing actions 5. Explanation - Use knowledge and experience to support your findings, select method to provide patient care 6. Self regulation - review experience, Apply ethical principles in your nursing practice. Identify in what way you can improve your own performance.
