The refraction of light as it passes through a prism can be measured using an instrument called a prism spectrometer. Refraction of this sort is used extensively in applied optics and in the design of many optical instruments. In this experiment you will determine the index of refraction of the prism material by using data obtained from the prism spectrometer. If a beam of light will be deviated from its original course if it passes through a prism. The angle between the ray emerging from the prism and the original direction of the beam of light is called the deviation angle. If the direction of the incident ray is varied, it is found that the deviation angle varies also. The angle of deviation becomes a minimum when the path of the ray through the prism is symmetrical. This means that the initial angle of incidence is the same as the final angle of refraction. Under these conditions the index of refraction of the prism is given by n= . Equation 1 (See example 35.7 in Serway for the derivation.) The spectrometer is used to measure the angles A and D. The spectrometer can also be used to measure the wavelength of light. 3. Swing the telescope into alignment with the collimator. Sighting through the telescope, focus the collimator so that the slit is in sharp focus. Adjust the slit to be narrow. Position the telescope so that the crosshairs are in line with the slit. Lock the telescope in this position. (See Figure 2) 4. Zero the angular scale and lock in place for the remainder of the experniment. Deviation angles will be measured relative to this position. Unlock the telescope so it swings freely.
