Physics 1107 Lab Report Lab 6 Gravity, Static & Kinetic Friction Alex Rickheim 10/26/2023 Summary I followed the procedure for Lab 6 and succeeded in taking data showing the difference in the amount of force used to move a wooden block. I measured the force of a wooden block being pulled across 3 different surfaces to record the amount of force that was needed to move it. I found that the wooden block moved best on the glass and moved the worst on the waxed paper. Using different materials to drag the wooden block across would have different outcomes. Introduction Gravity is a universal force of attraction between objects with mass, while static friction and kinetic friction are contact forces that resist relative motion between objects at rest and in motion, respectively. Understanding these concepts is essential for describing and predicting the motion of objects in various situations, such as sliding, rolling, and falling. Procedure This lab is all about measuring how surfaces change the force of friction on objects sliding over each other. To test this a wooden block is pulled with a spring scale over a level surface and pulled up an upward slant. The wooden block is also pulled over different surfaces to see how it affects the results, including; glass, waxed paper, and a table. This experiment is done to measure the static and kinetic friction of each surface. Quantitative Experimentation I did not perform this experiment myself but I watched the video of the lab being performed and was able to get information off of it. The experiment can be altered in lots of different ways, for example if I were
to perform this experiment I would add some more surfaces to pull the wood across like a rug/carpet, grass, ice etc. To see how those surfaces would have an effect on the amount of friction is needed to pull the wooden block. I would predict that the carpet and grass would take more force when pulling the wooden block, as for a surface like ice, very little force would need to be applied to the wooden block to see it move. Prediction and Method Question Data-Talking I did not perform this experiment myself so I used the provided data below to write this lab report. However the data would have been collected by using a Newton meter, which is a device that measures the force it takes to move an object. surface mass(kg) Static force Kinetic force table 0.09 0.34 0.32 table 0.132 0.52 0.45 table 0.174 0.66 0.57 glass 0.09 0.22 0.15 glass 0.132 0.35 0.27 Waxed paper 0.09 0.63 0.52 Waxed paper 0.132 0.9 0.75 Waxed paper 0.174 1.2 1.0 Data Analysis I used excel to do my data analysis, as the instructions stated. The graphs I created for this lab are seen below.
