Movie reflection
The movie “13 Days” is the movie shows the Cuban missile crisis which occurred
from October 16
th
, 1962 to October 18
th
, 1962 and this movie illustrates the President John F.
Kennedy with his closest associates reacted and made decisions about conflicts that might
have caused the war with the USSR. At that time, Cuba was supported by the Soviet Union directly, and the United States
felt great concerns about the communist country just established right under the American
territory. Then the United States government believed that strongly suppressing Cuba based
on the domino effect could collapse the Soviet Union (Sanchez Egozcue & Cordovi, 2008),
however, the action of the U.S. government worsened the diplomatic relationship between the
USSR. Furthermore, due to this action of the U.S. government, even the diplomatic
relationship with Cuba stagnated (Dominguez, 1997), and evolved the conflict between
liberalism and communism, drastically (Pious, 2001). Moreover, the response to this conflict,
President John F. Kennedy and his aides demonstrated their actions through their individual
capabilities involved in the confrontation with the Soviet Union and their overall abilities to
react to the threat from the Soviet Union (Shaabani & Eshagh Gordji, 2023). Their actions
showed the balancing the power and searching for the best strategies to avoid the war with
the USSR. This means that structural violence and power balance are not only about the
strength of military power but also require the high ability to create strategic resolutions at
the same time.
In the Cuban missile crisis, understanding the ideological differences related to
cultural differences is important. In the era of the ‘Cold War’, the ideological interests of the
U.S., which wanted to rebuild the new world order centered on the U.S. through increasing
the liberal democratic countries, pursuing liberal expansionism (Avery, 2012), and the Soviet
Union’s ideological increase that focused on the increasing communist countries, couldn’t be
aligned. Due to these kinds of ideological differences and the conflict shown the U.S. took
the domino effect and the Iron Curtain, importantly and pursued the increasing communist
countries and the Soviet Union’s collapse, while the Soviet Union pursued to block the
influence of America as much as possible. Based on this concept, in this movie, it is possible
to understand how ideological factors affected President John F. Kennedy in a liberal country,
he didn’t completely push his own opinions but at least tried to have discussions with his
aides and key personnel. In this way, the Cuban Missile Crisis, created by nationalism and
ideological adherence in Western and Eastern countries (Dominguez, 1997), were ideological
factors that influenced directly indirectly, such as President Kennedy listened to the opinions
of the people and discussed to decide the final action appropriately (Jervis, 2001).
The main parties involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis were the U.S., USSR, and
Cuba. Through the game theory, they influenced the escalation and de-escalation of conflict
situations. In the case of the U.S., they used media pressure, diplomatic negotiations, and
military action, while the USSR did hostility in-depth, maintaining and supporting Cuba
consistently, and so on (Shaabani & Eshagh Gordji, 2023) and both countries tried to get
more superiorities against each other by these kinds of methods. This deep conflict between
the U.S. and the USSR is due to Cuba’s military movements with nuclear bombs and missiles
(Dominguez, 1997). In conclusion, this movie shows the conflict by the ideological difference between
