Final Essay Topics
For your final essay topic please choose one of the following questions:
1.
Democracy is the most prevalent form of governance in the world today. Examine the
concept of democracy and the forms it has taken historically.
2.
Compare and contrast the historical evolution of either liberalism or socialism. How are
their current forms any different from or similar to their historical/classical forms?
3.
Discuss the concept of rule of law. What does the rule of law mean? How is it any
different from other forms of rules?
4.
Examine the nature of nation-state. What is the difference between nation and state?
What distinguishes the nation-state from other political formations such as empire or city-
state?
5.
Analyze the extent to which and the ways in which the public participates in politics
either in Canada or in a country of your choosing.
6.
Critically examine what is needed for elections to be considered free and fair. You can
use a single country as your case study and examine a specific election there.
7.
What is Authoritarianism? Discuss the definition of the concept and identify the various
forms it can take.
8.
Discuss the key differences between the realist and liberal theories of international
relations.
9.
Examine the ways in which the position of president in the United States differs from the
position of prime minister in Canada.
