Unit 3 Discussion 1 Goldstein (2018) states that an individual who has an experience from any stimulation of one of the human senses is an experience. Perception has several different characteristics which may be influenced by additional information. Every individual has varying experiences which inputs information, which then may aid the person in every day life tasks. An example of this may be an approach to solving a problem, before deciding the appropriate action to take to complete the task. Bottom-up processing is a type of sensory processing that feeds information from the eye to the brain from the surrounding environment (Goldstein, 2018). This type of sensory processing originates from the surrounding environment while the opposite of bottom-up, called top-down, comes from the brain. Top-down processing starts with the brain, which allows for identification of the surrounding environment as well as determining the purpose of objectives in said environment (Goldstein, 2018). For a top-down processing example pertaining to students from elementary to college levels, individuals must have a perception of language to understand speech to process communication. From infancy to adulthood, humans develop comprehension of language and how to speak, as well as the meaning of words, enunciation, and segmentation in various environments with multiple speakers, higher or lower volumes, and from certain distances (Goldstein, 2018). This is a critical tool for development to facilitate interactions among peers and instructors when in the educational setting for students. For a bottom-up processing example pertaining to students from elementary to college levels, individuals must have a developed sensory perception from visual stimulation to interpret information to gather the necessary knowledge for studies (Carbon, 2014). Students learn from the visual stimulus of what needs to be interpreted, which is then followed by the appropriate course of action. When viewing a certain color on a stoplight during driver’s education, students understand that from the eye to the brain that red means stop, yellow means slow down, and green means go from object perception.
