Module 8 Assignment 1. Choose one characteristic associated with autism and identify how that characteristic might affect a student in school and life. Sensory sensitivity is a characteristic that is associated with autism that can affect students in school and life. A classroom environment can be very overwhelming for a student with autism. Throughout the day there are loud bells, classmates talking/yelling with each other, or strong smells. Outside of the classroom, sensory sensitivity can make daily activities such as getting dressed difficult due to the different textures of clothing. Having sensory sensitivities can cause stress and anxiety to someone with autism affecting their daily life. 2. Describe two interventions that a teacher might use with a student with autism. An intervention that a teacher might use with a student with autism is to create a routine. Having a routine that the student follows everyday provides a sense of structure to help reduce any stress or anxiety they might have. Another intervention that a teacher can use with a student with autism is adding visual/structural activities when teaching a lesson. This can increase engagement from not only the student with autism, but all the students around them as they are able to participate and learn hands on. These are just two of the many ways teachers can help a student with autism. 3. Describe the effects that speech or language impairments can have on a person's ability to function in society. Speech or language impairments can significantly impact a person’s ability to function in society in various ways. A child with speech or language impairments often expresses their frustrations by communicating through physical aggression. This can lead to creating poor relationships with peers. An example of a speech or language impairment is a receptive language disorder which makes it difficult to follow directions or understand what others are saying. This can affect a person’s ability to function in school. A student with a language impairment might be called a poor listener or told they have selected hearing which can lead to them becoming frustrated and acting out or no longer wanting to attend school. 4. After watching the videos associated with this module, share your perspectives on what it would be like to have autism or a speech/language impairment OR what it would be like to have a family member with one of these disabilities. Be detailed and thoughtful in your response. After watching the videos associated with this module, it would be a unique and challenging experience to have autism or a speech/language impairment or having a family member with one of these disabilities. Autism and a speech/language impairment is different for every single person. Simple activities can be overwhelming due to sensory sensitivity and difficulty reading social cues. On the other hand, people with autism possess exceptional talents and abilities. Many people with speech/language impairments find creative ways to communicate with others.
