Lab 1 Answer Sheet Shaping & Taking High Quality Behavioural Observations (PSYC332 2023) 2 - Shaping Skinner Box Shaping My Pet Rat Stella What behaviours are being reinforced? Following the principles of shaping, Kelly is reinforcing successive approximations to the desired behaviour. That is, Stella is firstly reinforced for sniffing the lever, then for touching the lever, and then eventually for pressing the lever. How would you be able to tell that each behaviour had been learned before moving onto the next? How could you measure this? It is important to determine that each behaviour is occurring reliably before trying to shape the next. Note that you should, however, continue to reinforce any behaviour that is even closer to lever pressing. For example, if the rat did not reliably sniff the lever, but then began to touch the lever, you would still want to reinforce the rat for touching the lever! You can measure the response latency for the behaviour to determine whether that behaviour is occurring reliably. The response latency is the time between the rat consuming one reinforcer and when they next perform the behaviour that you are currently reinforcing. If the response latency is less than three seconds on five consecutive occasions, then the behaviour is occurring reliably. Read the explanation of shaping in your textbook 113-115. Based on this - which element typically included in shaping was not included in this video? Magazine training this is often the first phase of training where the rat learns that the sound of the food magazine means that food is available. This means that during shaping they eat as soon as food is provided by the experimenter. Animal Training at Wellington Zoo Shaping techniques are described approximately 2 minutes and 45 seconds into the video. They talk about reinforcing small approximations to the desired behaviour (the animal entering a crate). 4 - Inter-rater Reliability Timmy & Jimmy Inter-rater Calculation ( 9 22 ) × 100 = 40.91% (2 d.p.) Timmy and Jimmy agreed on exactly 40.91% of the observation intervals. 5 - ABA Time Sampling Methods Thought Exercise What are the strengths and weaknesses of each time sampling method when used for recording on- task behaviour? Whole interval recording is good for capturing continuous high-rate behaviours that we would typically be interested in increasing, e.g., on-task behaviour. Whole interval recording provides a reasonable estimation of duration since an interval is only scored if the behaviour occurred throughout the entire interval. Also, that would mean whole interval recording could pick up on those students who are not consistently paying attention. Therefore, whole interval would be most appropriate since it gives a reasonable estimate of duration which is very meaningful when looking at on-task behaviour, and it can better identify students who are not sustaining on-task behaviour. The only downside of whole interval is that it demands the undivided attention of the observer throughout the entire observation interval.
Lab 1 Answer Sheet Shaping & Taking High Quality Behavioural Observations (PSYC332 2023) Partial-interval recording would likely overestimate on-task behaviour. For example, if you were on-task 1s within a 10s observation interval, partial-interval would score that as the same if you were on-task for 9s within a 10s interval. As you can see, this would not be very meaningful if we were looking to improve on- task behaviour. Partial-interval recording would be useful if we were looking at off-task behaviour instead. Momentary time sampling could possibly be used since it is typically used for measuring continuous high- rate behaviours and has the benefit of being less demanding on the observer. However, it is not entirely suited for on-task behaviour as it would not capture duration or those who are not consistently paying attention. Test yourself quiz about time sampling definitions. What are the disadvantages of using whole interval recording? a. It can overestimate the number of intervals in which the behaviour occurred in. b. It can underestimate the occurrence of the behaviour in an observation period. c. It is bad for recording high-rate continuous behaviours. d. It demands the undivided attention of the observer. What are the advantages of using momentary time sampling? a. It captures low frequency behaviours well. b. It captures short duration behaviours well. c. It works well for measuring continuous activity behaviours. d. It is less demanding for the observer compared to other methods. What are the disadvantages of using partial interval recording? a. It can overestimate the overall duration of the behaviour. b. It can underestimate the rate of high frequency short duration behaviours. c. It is bad for measuring low frequency behaviours. d. It cannot be used for measuring off-task behaviours.
