Self-Efficacy: Reading Assignment Directions: Study and take notes as you read the material found on I-Learn. For this assignment you can either type your notes or write them out. In question # 2, you will post your notes either by cutting and pasting them or posting a picture of them. Answer the following questions completely and with understanding. 1. How much of the assigned Readings did you complete? A) I read all of it; keep reading. B) Some deep reading C) Skimming; but not deep reading D) I didn’t read any of it. 2. Copy and paste your notes from this week's readings below. You should include notes from each of the readings. Your notes should reflect the quality of your study and learning and be at least 300 words long. As I read through If at First, You Don’t Succeed, You’re in Excellent Company by Melinda Beck, I learned about self-efficacy and the strength that people must reach greatness in their lives. Self-efficacy is where people focus on their strengths to help them grow and develop. These people persevere to the end no matter what gets in their way to achieve their goals. As I read through Teaching, No Greater Call, I learned that agency could relate to Health Promotion. The agency allows people to choose and decide for themselves. In Health Promotion we have a desire to help change the community for the better good. We can educate and teach people, but at the end of the day, it is up to the people to choose to change. We can motivate and try to influence people, but we cannot force anyone to choose what we want. As I read through pages 176-177 from Health Behavior and Health Education, Theory, Research, and Practice, I learned that behavior can be changed with an increase in self-efficacy. There are four different ways that self-efficacy can increase including mastering experience, social modeling, improving physical and emotional states, and verbal persuasion. As I watched Efficacy, I learned that self-efficacy is what drives humans in this world to do bigger and better things. I learned that people must believe in themselves to achieve something greater. This video discusses the different ways of developing self-efficacy which include mastering experiences, social modeling, improving physical and emotional states, and verbal persuasion. As I watched How Efficacy Beliefs Work, I learned that efficacy beliefs are regulated through cognitive, motivational, emotional, and decisional processes. I learned that people could adjust to hard situations based on the way they perceive themselves. As I read through Teaching, No Greater Call, pages 67-69, I learned that we all have our responsibility to learn and to apply the things we learn to our own lives. We as teachers or health promotion educators have the responsibility to educate those in our classes to have a desire to learn and to apply the teachings.
As I read through Human Agency in Social Cognitive Theory, I learned about people and their choices and what drives them to make changes in their lives. I learned about the Social Cognitive Theory and how people change based on their motivators that including determinates that cause the influence to change. People are motivated by self-efficacy influences and these motivators reflect the choices they make and if they are willing to endure difficult situations or not. People are influenced by many factors including themselves that cause them to make intentional changes in their lives. As I watched Fields of Vision, I learned that children could participate in believing in themselves and making positive changes for their future. If children believe in themselves, they can do powerful things as they grow and get older. Courage is all that it takes for children to believe that they have the capability for success. 3. What stood out to you the most from the readings? Why? Something that stood out to me most from the readings is the Human Agency in Social Cognitive Theory article. In this article, I learned that most people hold the capabilities within themselves to make forceful and positive changes. I learned in this article that if people’s self-efficacy is strong, then they have a higher chance of reaching their goals. 4. Asking questions as you study is a way to deepen your learning. Write 1-3 questions you have regarding the readings and how to apply the lesson concepts in your life either as a professional or personally . What forms of human agency are conceptualized? How is self-efficacy developed at an older age? 5. Describe the connections between this week's case study ( refer to the Introduction page ) and your understanding of the readings . This week’s case study and the readings from his week connect because it’s the way that people perceive themselves that relates to their successes. In the case study, a child with high self-efficacy has a few fears in getting started but still learns to ride his bike because of his past experiences. The child with lower self-efficacy is more reluctant to learn to ride the bike because of past experiences. This case study relates to the readings because people with strong self-efficacy have the strength to preserve past things that are hard and achieve their goals.
