Technical support is available 24/7. Refer to the video tutorials for a basic overview of using the SPSS software located in the module's Required Resources and SPSS Assignment 1: An Introduction to SPSS. Questions: 1) Describe a research question in psychology that interests you. What is the correlation between low socioeconomic status and deviant behavior in adolescents? 2) State a hypothesis for an experiment related to your research question. Describe a method to test your hypothesis. Discuss the independent and dependent variable(s). A standing body of research has shown that individuals of lower socioeconomic status exhibit more economic strains, which devastate the parent-child relationship and negatively affect children’s behavior and academic success (Aute et al., 2020). Furthermore, research has shown that socioeconomic status has an impact on children’s cognitive abilities, such as language and executive function or processing (Pluck et al., 2021). Based on prior research and understanding of the impact of socioeconomic status on cognitive functioning, we hypothesize that there will be a positive correlation between socioeconomic status and deviant behavior in children, suggesting that low socioeconomic status is a factor associated with the presence of deviant behavior in children. The independent variable in the presented study is low socioeconomic status, as it represents the cause of the dependent variable; therefore, the dependent variable is deviant behavior as it is the outcome of the independent variable. Using nominal and interval measurements, a survey will be administered to each participant to determine the categorization of each variable for operationalization. Using an ANOVA test, we will determine the variance or correlation of the variable means to ascertain if a correlation between socioeconomic status and common signs of deviance exists. 3a) Create an SPSS database consisting of at least 15 theoretical participants who participated in the study described in item 2. To do this, you must first create the variables in the "Variable View."
Each variable name Data type (numeric) Width of the column (usually not necessary) Number of decimal places Label (variable name with more detail if necessary) Values (assign the value associated with the number coded)
Missing Columns Align Measure Role (leave on input) You must then enter the data in the "Data View."
