The goal of this discussion is to recognize that an observed association between two variables need not be due to a cause-and-effect relationship between the two variables. A job-training program is being reviewed. Advocates claim that because the unemployment rate in the manufacturing region the program took place in was 9% when the program began and 5% four years later, the program was effective. In your initial replies, please do the following: Provide one suggestion for what other factor might explain this outcome even if the program had no effect. Explain why it may have led to this outcome. When analyzing a study, we must consider if the results of the study accurately depict if the dependent variable is or is not a cause of the independent variable (internal validity) (Rubin & Babbie, 2016). For the study above the independent variable would the job-training program and the dependent variable would be the unemployment rate. In addition, studies must also consider threats to internal validity, which are additional variables, other than the independent variable, that have the potential to affect the dependent variable and the studies overall results. A different factor that could potentially explain this outcome is an internal validity threat such as history. History refers to extraneous events that occur during the course or at coinciding time with the study which can affect the dependent variable, an example of this in relation to the study mentioned above would be a political initiative to create more jobs in the specific region that the study is taking place, which could also help in lowering the unemployment rate.
