One small group activity you could implement to promote development in an area of phonics for students who struggle is games. Whether it is board games or online games, games can help children to develop their phonics skills. However, it should always be remembered that games help to teach the skill they do not replace the actual instruction. There is a familiar slogan that says, “You can lead more flies to honey than to vinegar”. Flies or in our case students are more likely to choose something fun over general instruction. Playing games “provide the rote practice that most students need to solidify their recognition of phonics patterns and that some need to an even greater degree (Smith 2022).” When you add engaging instruction to generalized instruction it increases the student’s interest. When you increase interest, you increase knowledge. Not to mention that all along the way students are learning how to follow and ask questions about the rules, take turns, important social skills, and what it means to be a sore loser or an over excited winner. The good thing about games is that they can be catered to every student’s interest. Such as superheroes for a group of boys or princesses for a group of girls. Phonics games can be completely customizable that means that you can use curriculum related material to create the phonics games.
