A lecture is given by an instructor, lecturer or speaker to the students through the form of a talk or presentation. Lecture method is very popular for all the instructors used in teaching and training at education field with all the modern training systems and computer technology. This method is very convenient because it can be used for a huge number of students and instructors have a greater control over the topic which will be taught in the classroom because they are the information provider for the class. Students are able to gain knowledge quickly as lecture is a straightforward way for instructor to provide knowledge to students. Auditory learner’s student may find that lectures in good for them because it is their learning style. “A competent speaker also can use the lecture to stimulate …show more content…
The classroom lecture is a special form of communication in which voice, gesture, movement, facial expression, and eye contact can either complement or detract from the content. (Davis, 1993). In this teaching method, a large amount of topics can be taught in a single class period without using any extra equipment or lab. Besides, students’ listening skills can be developed and help in learning languages. In article “Common Teaching Methods”, it is stated that strengths of lecture method that it presents factual material in direct, logical manner, contains experience which inspires, stimulates thinking to open discussion, and useful for a large group. (McCarthy, 1992). To make lecture method to be more effective and interesting for students, lecturer should deliver information dramatically by using example to make it more memorable by students. Then, the teachers need to ask questions throughout the lecture so students can involve in the learning process and to check whether they really understand about that specific topic and teacher also should get the feedback of students to improve their lecture
Lecturing is considered to be one of the oldest methods of teaching. Lectures need to
It is important to decide at an early stage on the most appropriate teaching method for each candidate, to enable every candidate to achieve their learning goal in the easiest way possible. Some candidates will not respond well to classroom style teaching and may require one to one assistance for them to develop, others may develop their understanding better through demonstration or through explanations given by the tutor.
Listening and taking notes on what the teacher or lecturer is saying happens most of the time in classes. In this whole process, students who listen to their teachers will be able to compare their own view that contradicts with their teacher’s opinion, or learn a lot of new ideas and knowledge, or get a deep insight on the particular subject that is being learnt. Listening is significant for students, despite in school or outside the learning platform.
The number of American classroom is in 20 or so. It belongs to the small class teaching. The small classroom is like a laboratory in China from the function. In such small classroom teaching ,the teacher ,on the one hand, can understand the students more faster and better. The teacher have more opportunity to understand each student’s learning conditions, personality hobbies, special skill, ability and so on and the teacher also has more time to guide students individually and can get better communication with students. On the other hand,Students can take full use of multimedia technology for homework as much as possible .Each student has chance to use technology in class to give their presentations and involve in the teaching interaction in the small classroom.
One of the challenges is that how the student see himself related to the lecture or perhaps would ask himself why I should learn these stuffs, completely unnecessary. Either you get involved and have an real life experience that relate you to the topic or if you cannot relate anything of
In the videos, “Eye Contact, Posture, Gestures, Pacing, Fluency, Volume, and Tone” Lily Lamboy, states that learning to speak in front of class is crucial in order to construct a good point. Lamboy presents several points students need to learn when giving a speech. Speakers should maintain eye contact with the audience during their speech. Posture is what speakers should do with their body when speaking in front of others, they should avoid rocking back and forth. Gestures are similar to punctuation the speaker may use appropriate gestures when making a point. For pacing, speakers who get nervous talk fast and ramble should practice speaking slow. Students should maintain fluency when they are speaking by taking a deep breath and avoid using
In previous assignment, I stated that the two ways communication is the best way to go about teaching a class. Starting from hands on experience to the discussions in class would be very encouraging to the students. The level of teaching class differs from undergrad or grad students, and each one has set of requirements must be met. For the undergrad level class, the aim is to make them think objectively with unbiased eyes to the industrial practice. In other words, you prepare them to the job market ready with all the tool necessary to evaluate, judge, and defend their position. Undergrad level class is difficult than grad
However in the teacher centered approaches do not give much attention to the learners needs. The teacher carries out the lesson as a lecture and there is not much interaction between the two parties and the students remain as passive recipients of the knowledge (Kavanoz,
For example, during my observation of the beginning of new content on pedigrees, the teacher relied heavily on lecture with the use of a Power Point presentation on the Smartboard. Throughout the lecture, the teacher explained and illustrated the content and model the skills needed. During the lesson, the students were guided to take notes on required information. The teacher presented
Teaching creates an effective way to communicate that permits verbal, written, and nonverbal usage. When teaching it is important to speak loud or use a microphone and be clear, as a Drill Sergeant this was easy; we learned to project our voice from the diaphragm. In Drill Sergeant School we were tested from 100 meters away, to assure the instructor could understand our verbal commands. (5. Drill Sergeant School). During lectures and meetings I give details to highlight, information in the form of a Power Point, outlines, maps, graphs, or schematics to assist in communicating information to my audience. As with giving a speech—if possible open
A teacher’s lecture is generally one-size- fit-all. Not every student has the same pace of learning. While some students can follow the teacher’s lecture with convenience, most of the others require time to chow on the information that they are getting.
Lecture characteristics is how professors present material to their students. Lecturers can convey vital information using various tactics. For example, some lecturers use humor when presenting themes, concepts or other important points. Furthermore, repetition of information, the various tones, and the length of time spent on specific material are all methods of conveying materials importance. For you to succeed in university, it is essential to familiarize yourelf with the various lecturer characteristics. By doing so, you prevent yourself from wasting time by learning and concentrating on excess material. Being able to distinguish what is excess material could also help in the elimination of
The lecture was about consciously listening to one another which I feel Is very important. The most important thing the speaker recited was that “consciously listening creates understanding”. Which is powerful cause in my opinion a good percentage of people are stuck with their nose in their phone in today’s world, people would rather look at a conversation on an electronic device rather than engaging in one in person. Other topics that the speaker brought to my attention was the dangers in the world from not listening as well as the different kind of listening signs and the five tips to help you increase your conscious listening skills.
Podcasts can become a useful tool for people with different learning styles (Hsu, 2007), and especially for those who are used to study 'on the go '. Moreover, for some students, there is a need for repeated listening or reading lectures to better understand the learning material or detail to remember what was discussed in the previous lesson, as well as in preparing for the exam.
An additional way that educators can make the class stimulating while maintaining student interest is to include voice fluctuations and floor coverage in their lectures. We have all experienced those teachers who never change their voice or their position on the floor during the course of an hour. These monotone voices and stand still positions are almost hypnotizing; students get sluggish and drop curiosity fast. My ideal teacher would use their voice to expand and carry on the students’ attention for the whole hour.
