Rebuilding Concentration Concentration has taught me a lot about leadership, how it gives me patience, and how I am able to accomplish things more efficiently. In the speech, “Solitude and Leadership” by William Deresiewicz, he talks about what it takes to have the leadership mentality and how solitude is essential to achieve the goal of true leadership. Deresiewicz starts off his speech by outlining that “Leadership is what you are here to learn—the qualities of character and mind that will make you fit to command a platoon, and beyond that, perhaps, a company, a battalion, or, if you leave the military, a corporation, a foundation, a department of government”(168). Immediately that grabbed my attention and brought me to associate leadership with concentration, the action or an act of bringing things together in this way, or of bringing together power, wealth, and resources. I have been affected by the concept of concentration a great deal more than others, starting from the early age of 8 when I was diagnosed with ADHD. At such a young age, I did not know what to think of it, especially when my doctor said that I had a ‘disorder’ I expected that I was going to die. I was prescribed medication to help defeat some of the symptoms that came along with ADHD; nonetheless the one thing I noticed was that I was able to concentrate for once in my life. With this newfound concentration I had developed over the medicine, my grades rose, my athletics approved and in general my life
