Bullying by definition is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions. [Why] Bullying has grown new outlets over the last decade. With social media outlets and text messaging added to the game, bullying is not just about getting tormented face to face anymore. Deviance is an action or behavior that violates social norms, including a formally enacted rule, as well as informal violations of social norms. Deviant behavior is any behavior that is contrary to the dominant norms of society. Norms are rules and expectation by which members of society are conventionally guided. Social norms differ from culture to culture. Deviance can be criminal or non-criminal.

There are many different forms of bullying, such as physically bulling someone is when someone is hit, punched, pushed, or have their personal items stolen and any other kind of physical aggressive behaviour. Verbal bullying is when someone is called names, threatened. Social bullying is when someone is left out, deliberately ignored and has bad things spread about them and made to feel like an outsider, Psychological bullying is when someone is stalked or intimidated.

Bullies may abuse their victims verbally, physically, or psychologically. Bullying may involve name-calling, pushing or hitting, or preventing an individual from joining a social group or participating in an activity. It may also involve harassing, embarrassing, or threatening a person using cell phones, text-messaging devices, interactive games, instant messages, or websites. This type of bullying is called cyberbullying (Funk & Wagnalls). Unlike traditional bullying, which is most likely to occur at school, cyberbullying can occur anywhere that children and youth have access to technology, leaving targets accessible to perpetrators at any time of the day or night. Although bullying is often associated with children, bullying of adults by adults is just as pervasive and harmful. Adult bullies are characterized as often being subtle in their attack by starting harmful rumors or by using sarcastic or demeaning language to dominate or embarrass, being self-centered, lacking empathy for others, spontaneous in their attacks, and/or using the threat of attack (as opposed to using physical violence or actions) as a means to frighten and demonstrate power (Kowalski).

Baezelon (2013) says that “Bullying is a particular form of harmful aggression, linked to real psychological damage, both short and long term.” A bully is someone who feels the need to pick on others, sometimes due to his or her own inferiority. There are four different types of bullying. Physical bullying is any type of physical harm to someone, such as hitting, kicking, or pushing. Verbal bullying is putting someone down through words some examples are name calling or insults. Indirect Bullying is gossiping or spreading rumors with the intention to hurt the victim. Bullying can be both aggressive and verbal abuse among people that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose. Bullying involves repeated acts of anger and violent behavior. A child who grows into this infamous term known as a “bully”, result into preying on and threatening a victim who is weaker physically, mentally and emotionally. There are four common types of bullying. It is important for parents to understand which type of bullying is concerning their child so they can understand what is happening to them and what actions should be taken to help their child. The first type of bullying is physical bullying that includes; hitting, kicking, tripping, pinching, pushing, or damaging property. The second type of bullying is verbal bullying that includes; name-calling, insults, intimidation, homophobic/racist remarks, or verbal abuse. The third type of bullying is social and emotional bullying. This is also called “relational bullying.” This type of bullying includes behavioral actions designed to harm a child’s reputation or cause humiliation. For example, lying, spreading rumors, negative facial gestures, playing cruel jokes to embarrass a child, etc.

Physically being bullied frequently involves some sort of physical assault or attack, or can also consist of having one's personal belonging destroyed, tampered or stolen. Verbal bullying comes from the usual form of name calling that may be done due to a person's gender make up, sexual orientation, religious, age, or race. Due to the increase availability of technology indirect bullying is one of the most widespread types of bullying. It is usually the kind of bullying that countless people may do without even knowing so. Indirect bullying is the distribution falsely stories and rumors about an individual without the person knowing so, as well as the deliberate exclusion from social groups and gatherings. A current major issue, cyber bullying can also fall into the grouping of indirect bullying, but also includes bullying that is done with the use of any electronic device such as, email, text messaging, pictures through the use of text or email, message boards, websites, blogs, and even

Olweus (1993) later added another form of bullying called "indirect bullying", which involves social isolation and exclusion from the group. Digital bullying has also become a problem of interest recently and includes "sending menacing messages by phone, e-mail (or instant messaging) and creating hate-filled web pages about a person where they include personal information about that person" (Aluede, 2006). Much of this definition is the way in which bullying was defined for the participants of the study.

Today, bullying is a social issue that chimed its way to the top of the list that’s causing self harm or the harm of others. Bullying is defined as a blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people. There are many forms of bullying: Physically, which involves hitting, tripping, and other kinds of force in which someone put hands on you. Verbal, involves hurtful name-calling, teasing, and comments. Social is using relationships to hurt someone. Lastly, Cyber bullying, is when someone uses social media or cellular devices.

Many kids all around the world are abused by their parents, peers or even by complete strangers. One of these types of abuse is bullying. At a first glance, we might think that it is an older kid beating/teasing a younger classmate however; bullying consists of much more than this. The basic definition of bullying is when your behavior hurts or harms another person physically or emotionally. There are many different types of bullying, which may lead to a victim becoming violent later on. There is teasing and name calling, there is also picking and shoving the kid. However, the most extreme one would be beating up the child, hurting them physically and mainly, emotionally.

Physical bullying is a form of bullying where the bully uses physical strength to hurt his/her victim intentionally. Boys usually use this form of bullying. A real life example: A boy was bullied by another boy who attacked him many times and threatened him. He almost asphyxiated him once. However, his friends helped him and now he is not bullied anymore. (Seppe, n.d.)

There are many types of bullying which is highly dependent on the nature of bullying. for example, the physical bullying may incorporate such behavior as hitting, pinching, kicking and any form of physical abuse considers physical bullying. The verbal bullying which incorporate spreading rumors, gossiping, insulting and teasing. Next which is the emotional bullying and this includes isolating and excluding other from the group. Finally, the cyber bullying which is another form of a violence practiced when online communication (Rai,2012). The most common type of bullying among females is verbal bullying (“Verbal Bullying” 1). This type of psychological bullying uses derogatory terms to demean, or lower, the victim in the eyes of others to show that the bully has power over them (“Verbal Bullying” 1). This causes the person to have low self-esteem and develop depression in that victim (“Verbal Bullying” 1). Verbal bullying is the most psychologically damaging and lasts well into adulthood (Aluede et al. 6). “[Words] have a power all their own, and the realities of verbal bullying can have very physical consequences, even if the aggressor never lays a finger on the victim” (“Verbal Bullying” 1) In more severe cases of verbal bullying, or any bullying for that matter, can lead to drugs because the victim wants to escape his or her tortured life, in more extreme cases if the person’s depression worsens it could lead to suicide (“Verbal Bullying” 1).
