Bullying in Elementary Schools It is no secret that children begin to absorb what they are presented with very early on in their childhood. Any form of abuse during the elementary school years can be particularly harmful to a child’s confidence and outlook on life because it is when they are learning and growing their social circles the most. This is a serious matter and can result in the dropping of grades, long-term withdrawal from relationships and self hatred. Those in support of bullying think that it is a social problem that can never be solved. They believe that everyone is raised and conditioned to be different; some of those people will end up bullying, some will not. Many in support of bullying claim that even anti-bullying policies are almost never reinforced; only put into place to scare children out of bullying. What these people do not understand is that the effect of bullying on a child at such a young age is not a short term problem, it is a long term social problem. Let us delve a little further into the effects of being bullied at a young age. Being a victim of childhood bullying can result in depression throughout one’s life. It can cause low self esteem and lead to health problems related to high anxiety and stress levels. Adults who were bullied in elementary school are proven to be more suicidal than those who were not. I read an article by Oliver Emberton, a man who was bullied in elementary school. He tells the story of a time he was nearly drowned by bullies. “I was dragged to a river where my head was pinned underwater. In the brief seconds when I was let up for air, all I could hear was the crowd laughing.” He finishes his story by saying that he pretended to drown to escape from their torturing. As more and more children go to school, the rates of bullying go up as time goes by. there are many times at which students suffer all the bullying that occurs within their lives. As more schools become aware of the magnitude of the bullying occurring right under their noses, there are rules created to aid the victim. There are various types of bullying and these are created to do one thing, instill superiority among the “stronger” and place a feeling of inferiority. Bullies are the ones who are detrimental to a child’s development.
Issue: If you or your child have ever been a victim of bullying then you know how horrible one can feel. There are many emotions and fears associated with bullying, and no one should have to be subjected to it. Bullying can have a lasting effect not only in one’s present life but their future as well. Bullying is very prominent in schools today, and there has been an increase in school shootings, which is the extreme reaction to being bullied. Children need to consider each other’s feelings before they decide to bully or pick on each other.
Bullying has become a major topic of discussion within the education field in our country. The number of national public service announcements that center around controlling/stopping bullying has undoubtedly been heightened in the United States. Now more than ever, United States citizens are witnessing a constant influx of news stories developing around the problems that associate with bullying. This is certainly no different for those living in Northwest Ohio as more and more instances of bullying are being exposed at all educational levels with our children via local media outlets as well. Bullying has even hit close to home for me as a single mother as my 6-year-old daughter. One of the easiest ways in order to eliminate the frequency of bullying would be to implement very strong anti-bullying programs in schools, this is the place where many children spend most of their days aside from home, these programs should be effective on a various amount of cases. Michael Morrow did research on elementary school anti-bullying programs and wrote the article “Consultation in Bullying Prevention: An Elementary School Case Study.” This article looked at the various research that has been done on anti-bullying programs and the papers that have been written about it. “Multiple prevention programs have been developed and utilized around the world to address bullying in schools and many employ a schoolwide or whole-community approach. In the last two decades, there has been a surge of anti-bullying programs that have come out for elementary schools. It is important to inform our youth on exactly what bullying is, strategies for prevention and coping. Education about bullying became a main goal for elementary school in the last two decades due to the exponential rate of school shooting, suicides and cyber bullying. The question is whether or not these programs are effective in education and prevention This paper will discuss why bullying is such a concerning issue, the goals and promises of prevention programs and if these are effective or not.
There is not a single person who likes to tolerate, endure, or undergo the process of being bullied. Bullying is a chain of verbal or physical abuse that an instigator performs on their victim in an attempt to exploit the victim's insecurities, only so the same initiator may feel better about their own faults. Bullying remains a progressively notorious topic due to the unbiased choice of victims and death-related incidents. In particular, schools have become a predominantly natural location for bullies to prey on victims, but schools have finally started to respond to this epidemic issue. Schools have initiated anti-bullying programs to, if not stop bullying as a whole, at least, reduce bullying to a minimum; however, even with anti-bullying programs in effect, the bullying dilemma still continues, which suggest that school programs remain ineffective. Many people do not realize how serious bullying has become. If you look at statistics suicides due to bullying have increased over just a few short years. This has become a very big problem for not only the victim but the bully as well as it affect both of them. School bullying is mentally destructive to not only the victims, but bullies because of the harmful words, harassment, and physical violence involved as well as the consequences for the bully.
School bullying and bullying as a whole has become a growing concern. The need for more intervention is more recognized, as incidents of bullying and inappropriate acts towards others occur in places outside of the classroom. This literature takes a closer look at bullying in schools. Olwesus (2013) states “the field of bullying research is to some extent plagued by problems, disagreements, and unresolved issues” (p.752). Whether if anyone will agree on the root of bullying, the fact remains that bullying has to be examined at its very core to remedy the matter before it becomes a bigger concern. There is a dire need for intervention based programs to be set in place to address the fact the act of bullying has lasting effects on the bully and the victim. When intervention programs are put into place to address bullying, the act of bullying decreases due to the gained understanding of the effects.
It is only in the recent years that attention has turned toward the widespread problem of bullying, especially in schools, and that bullying is identified as a serious problem that merits intervention and research (Coy). Therefore, relatively little effort has been made to overcome or address the problem, which still remains a widespread social vice. This paper purports to illustrate how, despite efforts made to rectify the situation, bullying still remains rampant, and is getting worse.
Bullying in school is not a new phenomenon; it is as old as the education system. In texts as ancient as the Bible examples are explicit and evident. Throughout the ages bullying has been a tragic and catastrophic element that seems inevitable as it affects the lives of its victims. As kids we probably never understood the term “bully” or why we were subjected to being bullied or why other peers were getting bullied. The fact that some children are constantly harassing other peers verbally, physically, and socially to a point of self-harm is very heartbreaking. Bullying has definitely been an issue in schools for years and now it’s affecting our children as early as elementary school. According to an article from Family Circle, bullying amongst students has reached epidemic proportions, and it’s taking a heavy toll on our children. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to obtain understanding and awareness about the causes and effects of bullying in children.
“With ignorance comes fear – from fear comes bigotry. Education is the key to acceptance.” –Kathleen Patel. That is a famous saying that indirectly shows how to stop bullying, it says that to stop bullying people need to have a good education. Bullying is the act of aggressive and continuous behavior against a weaker person that leads to physical and/or mental injuries. Most of bullying cases occur during childhood and in school years; this makes a kid to be afraid of going to school and not seizing the opportunity of having a good education. To stop this serious problem schools must take action on an anti-bullying campaign and make the school a safer place. The imminent change needs to be promoted at two levels. First at the home level, the family needs to create a charming atmosphere where the kid feels love. Then in the classroom or school where teachers can provide direct discussions with children who are victims of bullying and with the ones who harass.
Recent studies reveal that the frequency of bullying is about 30% in young children and adolescents (2). This exhibits that bullying should be looked at on a larger scale, as bullying is more than an act of violence, but a popular trend among young peers. Current statistics have revealed in 2010 alone, 1 in 7 students between kindergarten and grade 12 have reported being bystander, bully, victim or even both (3). Bullying does not only affect the youth, but as children continue to grow and mature so does the root of this hate crime. The bully may find themselves engaging in more criminal acts later in life as 40% of students who have taken part in severe acts of bullying will eventually get involved with more serious crime and attain a criminal record by the time they are 30 (4). As bullying continues to increase among young people, crime rates will continue to grow with them. If bullying is not prevented in the earliest stages of life, the government will have to deal with more than the simple acts of bullying as these people mature.
