Selecting a candidate to serve in the president position for a community college is a critical responsibility. Governing boards need to first decide on what qualifications they are looking for in a president. In order to gain an accurate list of the qualifications, it is important to obtain information from various areas and departments on campus. Faculty and staff members, students and alumni should all be included in the process of identifying what is important to their areas. A search committee will be formed which includes representatives from each of these areas. In addition to assessing the current needs of the institution, it is important for the governing board to consider the strategic goals, priorities, and future of the college. Atwell (2004), stated the job of a college president, is difficult because of the increased attention to fundraising, the intense competition within the industry, and the necessity to work with stakeholder groups with often conflicting pressure. While they do have a tremendous focus on workforce development and training, the opportunity to take a more active role in higher education exists. By adjusting their focus to act as a bridge for students, the community college has the ability to soften the transition financially and educationally. Community colleges must move beyond their reliance on open acceptance policies and actively pursue students who would otherwise attend universities. By offering comparable course tracks that will challenge and educate they can move even further past the image of being a second class institution. More focus must be placed on both building articulation agreements with the universities and educating potential students about the benefits of making the community the next stop on their education
Students nowadays face many challenges when it comes to obtaining a college education. We evaluate an institution’s quality based on what we need the most. The qualities sought out may vary by each person’s personal point of view. However, as a student, I’ve found that most students seek for an institute that benefits them the most. Attending a community college has been an enormous advantage towards my education. I have been attending San Bernardino Valley College for the last two semesters. I have come to respect their philosophies and values. The institution has now been in business for 87 years. They venture to encourage both students and faculty towards high standards of achievement and progress into exceptional members of the society. They now offer a variety of degrees, transfer programs and certificates for a wide range of students. San Bernardino Valley College has an accomplished staff, student support services and technological tools that pave the road towards the conquest of a quality education.
The candidate should also be able to build and delegate a team. If the selection committee hires somebody who is over-dependent on others, like a mentor of some sort, success would be out of the question. The candidate should also be able to circumvent from too much power as he will be prone to abusing it. He should convert his power to influence others but not to exploit them.
Community college is a great institution for students to start their educational journey. Especially when they do not have the funds or lack some of the prerequisite that a university would require. Community college was created to serve the community, traditional and non-traditional students with the best higher education and lifetime learning opportunities. The faculty and staff members at a community college is there to provide leadership in education while going above and beyond to recognize the needs of the students and the community by providing excellent educational programs and support services that are available to all who have the opportunity to take advantage of them. “Student services now include recruitment and retention, counseling, student activities, student health, financial aid, academic support, career centers, transfer centers, and supplemental services such as transportation, child care, and services tailored for specific populations of students” (Cohen, Brawer, & Krisker, 2014, pg. 209). My philosophy in fulfilling the role and mission of the community college, is to establish the mission, vision, goals and values to guide all students on their journey to strive to become successful both in school and in today’s economy.
The faculty is entrenched in their ways, and change causes ambiguity and uncertainty. Moreover, the faculty in the organization feel uncertain about the new concepts presented by Dr. Ball to the deans altering their salaries and evaluations (Bolman & Deal, 2013, p. 31). The proposed changes create competition and unrest among the faculty and will shatter the business-as-usual campus conduct and job security. The dean's and faculty are grasping at the symbolic frame, defending their beloved academic lifestyle (Bolman & Deal, 2013, p. 248). The secondary problem in this case is support from the deans of the incentive program that will restore Weston University prestigious reputation as set by the board and developed by the president.
I have lived in North Carolina for almost fifteen years now. Throughout this period I have seen the abundance of opportunities here in North Carolina especially in education. There are countless numbers of great colleges and universities, however, since I have lived in the mundane city of Greensboro I feel constricted in my environment. Reading the article “An Academic Advising Model” it was mentioned that there was “little agreement regarding the nature of academic advising and who should perform the function.” (O'Banion, 1994) By working closely with academic advisors on a daily basis this article shed some light on the process and has given me a new perspective on the job that needs to be accomplished. A model is mentioned on how advising should be carried out in respects to a community college and for the most part I agree on the process that is mention. The student should first know what they want from their life; from there explore what career will make that happen. Once the first two items have been decided on the next three steps should be much easier for the student.

Founded on the philosophy and core values of Malcolm Baldridge (The Malcolm Baldrige School of Business, 2015), the undergraduate business administration degree plan is comprised of a variety of courses that take students through the assorted elements of operating a business, from classes designed to explain the macro environment that affect organizations to how a business should manage its finances. As the capstone course for this degree, the Business Policy Seminar required that I utilize all of the knowledge I have gained in my previous degree work and apply it towards planning, developing and implementing organizational strategies.
