Selecting a candidate to serve in the president position for a community college is a critical responsibility. Governing boards need to first decide on what qualifications they are looking for in a president. In order to gain an accurate list of the qualifications, it is important to obtain information from various areas and departments on campus. Faculty and staff members, students and alumni should all be included in the process of identifying what is important to their areas. A search committee will be formed which includes representatives from each of these areas. In addition to assessing the current needs of the institution, it is important for the governing board to consider the strategic goals, priorities, and future of the college. Atwell (2004), stated the job of a college president, is difficult because of the increased attention to fundraising, the intense competition within the industry, and the necessity to work with stakeholder groups with often conflicting pressure. These skills could serve as a baseline for setting the criteria for community college presidents. The governing board can utilize the skill of organizational strategy to provide insight for the vision and direction for the college.
