Management is a universal human activity where individuals take responsibility for an action and intentionally shape its outcome (Boddy, 2014).
Management can variously be defined as science or art and its status lies somewhere between the strong elements of each.
Management is a mix of science as well as art as it contains several universal truths and managing requires certain skills, which is gained by day-to-day practices. Science is about experimentation while art is about experiencing. A manager to have a successful career should have knowledge of both art and science. Science teaches to experiment while art teaches us to experience. E.g.: Like bread and butter, science and art are complementary to each other in the case of management.
According to Drucker “Management is about human beings. Its task is

Art helps in increasing awareness about the sustainable management. Introducing art has become a great importance to reduce dangers identified with problems associated with the viewpoint of the general population. This is vital in terms of sustainability, as workers need to be convinced and persuaded. In order to execute progressions of the business in the longer term. The absence of importance given to art in managerial change can largely be credited to the “science”- centered nature, which has developed enterprises, for example, development and
Management is the allocation of scarce resources against an organization 's objective, the setting of priorities, the design of work and the achievement of results. Most important, it 's about controlling.
Management is a planning and controlling process for reaching organizational goals by working with peoples and other organizational resources.
Management is the organization and coordination of a business’s activities in order to achieve the defined goals (“Management”). The person who is in charge of the management of a business is called a manager, and a manager’s job is to “directly supervise, support, and help activate work efforts to achieve the performance goals of individuals, teams, or even an organization as a whole” (Schermerhorn, 2014, Takeaway 1.1, para. 3). To someone who is not knowledgeable in the field, managers seem to have an easy job. In reality, how a manager do their job can affect the people working under them and also the company on a larger scale. Some people are born with great management skills and they are able to do the job naturally. But management
Utilising the 14 principles of management and the systems theory an arts manager assist with personality and idea clashes to create a more productive workplace. Bendixen states that “The roles of management is [sic] not restricted to or focused only on publicity and public relations; it covers a board range of communication functions, including negotiations, campaigns and decision-making, that prepare the ground for day-to-day operations as well as long-term strategy,” (2000, p. 8), this suggests that any management role whether corporate or arts incorporates working with many other departments within organisations. An arts administrator is a leader; their duty is to help research and work with many different people from a wide variety of industries and professions. An art manager not only manages the people within an arts organisation but they can also be responsible for assisting in financial activities.
Different scholars have defined the nature, scope, importance & purpose of HRM in different ways. Listing all the definitions given to HRM by the scholars in the field lies beyond the scope of this study. Given that, an attempt was made to select the most comprehensive and relevant definitions of HRM to this subject of study as follows:
Management is the basis of how any given organization operates and how each activity preformed is organized that makes each day possible and profitable for the overall good of the company. Power
According to Boddy (2008), management refers to the process of bringing together individuals with the sole intention of achieving desired objectives, aims and goal using available resources effectively. Composed of several vital tenets, this paper seeks to
Management is the process of planning and maintaining an organization where individuals, work together efficiently to achieve pre-set objectives (Koontz, 1990).
On the other hand it could be argued that management can be seen as an art. Literature proves the Armed Forces leaders to be the best at managing change “Orion claims the most effective approach to huge cuts and organisational upheaval is for leaders to persuade their staff to understand why changes "are good for them", a process that involves asking employees lots of questions about how they are feeling. This kind of "brain-friendly leadership" is more prevalent in the armed forces” (Dobinson, 2012). This in itself is an art form as the Armed Forces leaders are taking practical knowledge and skill and applying it to their subordinates. It is arguable that since managers are accountable for the smooth running of new strategies, management can be perceived as an art. This is due to organisational change requiring communication, vision and craft to avoid crisis. “Leaders of successful defence transformations resist the urge to reorganise; they focus first on securing the successes that can make a big difference to the momentum of a program” (Chinn & Dowdy, 2014). This in itself is an art form as leaders are improving performance and altering knowledge into actions to reach measurable results. The knowing-doing gap by Pfeffer and Sutton alongside creative action articulates that a business that acts upon their knowledge eliminates fear, eradicates destructive internal competition. Managers must have the appropriate tools to accomplish their tasks and have a vision to employ
It makes it realistic by motivating the workforce, developing commitment in them and improving communication.(Armstrong M,2003) Traditional Personnel management deals with short term planning and controlled externally. With employee relations’ perspective, it has low trust and less communication. It has lot to do with labour management.(limited to the people and not deals with strategy) On the other hand, HRM emphasizes that employees are critical to achieving sustainable competitive advantage and is central to organisational strategic performance.(Bratton and Gold,1999).HRM plays great role with organisation’s corporate strategy. But to do this, all HR strategies must be integrated and must be in line with overall business strategies.(Lecture Notes,2004 Topic 1)

In today’s ever changing economy, society’s idea of management is becoming increasingly more difficult to sustain with the continuous demands of the position. A successful manager must have a certain level of expertise and problem solving techniques to carry out the daily tasks required. Over the years, there have been various ideas on what management is, such as planning, organizing, leading and controlling.
While the writer has endeavored to point out that there is a need for the inculcation of science and artistic approach in the management approach, there is little information that has
Loui Vuitton, Dior and Burberry appear to be the top Fashion Brands in the world in Wonderlist (2015). Without the combination of both art and science those brands would not be the successful brands they are today. This also applies to change management as, it also needs both art and science. The Oxford Dictionary (2015) defines art as, ‘…human creativity and social life… a skill at doing a specified thing…’ That suggest that in management, art is the creation of new ideas and the involvement for everyone to have their opinion heard. The Oxford Dictionary (2015) defines science as, ‘ The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation
Management can be defined as the art or act of doing things or activities through the efforts of other people to accomplish desired goals. It deals with the organising and coordination of people, activities, materials, machines and money.
