Qualitative Data Collection
There are several types of methods that can be used for qualitative research. They include ethnographic, case study, phenomenological, ground theory, and critical study. The following will detail what the methods are and how they could be used in a classroom at Stephen Decatur Middle School. The research question being utilized for each example scenario is “will the use of audio books increase engagement for seventh grade special education students during independent reading sessions?”
Ethnographic Ethnographic studies are in depth and focus on culture. “Ethnography has been the primary mode of study in anthropology for many years” (McMillan, 2012, p. 278). Ethnography is used for studying the common aspects of groups, in education researchers using ethnography study cultural themes. A teacher researching at Stephen Decatur Middle School would need to spend a significant amount of time observing, interacting with students, interviewing students and analyzing artifacts. For example during FLEX class, the teacher could observe students during Silent Sustained Reading. The observations could clue the researcher into the attitudes of the students on independent reading. The researcher would also need to spend time interviewing students to get their personal perspectives on the issues. Lastly, the researcher would need to evaluate any artifacts associated with the silent sustained reading such as reading logs, reading journals, teacher notes on
Case study was research strategy adopted for this study. It is one of the types of qualitative research study (Creswell, 1998). According to Rubin and Babbie (2013) which view case study as a particular examination of phenomenon. In this study case study explore the influence e-resources has on the professional development and classroom practices of beginner teachers and providing a detailed information through multiple source of data collection methods such as semi-structured interview, observation, data analysis and research journal.However,Creswell,2007 highlighted that case study is a qualitative approach that explore bounded system of phenomenon over time. More so, Yin (2009) validates that case study is an empirical
Qualitative and quantitative research methods are two alternative applications for research methods. Both are very different in how data is collected, what data is collected, and how data is measured. Both of these research methods are utilized amongst the major areas of psychology and the social sciences. This paper will provide a brief description of qualitative and quantitative methods, provide the differences between the two approaches along with the terminology used for both; I will also refer to my article of choice from week one and specify which research method is used in that particular study; and finally, I will determine whether that same research study is non-experimental or experimental.
Qualitative research methods are complex meaningful analysis characterised by processes and meanings that are not experimentally examined or measured in terms of mathematical measurements (Lincoln, 2003; Sarantakos, 2005). Quantitative research however, relies and builds on mathematical procedures and methods, such as frequency, quality, amount and statistical procedure. This paper will compare and contrast both qualitative and quantitative research methods endeavouring to highlight differences and similarities between the two methods.
Compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative methods on each of the elements listed. Please use scholarly, academic literature to support your response.
In this assignment I will be comparing different research methodologies, which might be used in health and social care setting.
The article I chose to discuss is: Davis, H. A., & Bowman, S. L. (2015). Examining experiences of weight-related oppression in a bariatric sample: A qualitative exploration.
Death is something that we all have to deal with, be it in our profession or in our daily lives. This article discusses the reasons why caring for dying patients is stressful for nurses and is a high risk for burn out. The article also gives findings related to the study and gives recommendations based on the results. The study shows that education is needed for the nurses that care for the dying patient.
Qualitative research method is a systematic strategy used for gathering information that are non-numerical, that is, they use visual and narrative words instead of using number. The data collected are from comprehensive case studies, focus groups a qualitative research approach whereby subjects answers an open-ended interview questions, likewise each others ' comments; ethnographies or field observation. (Headlessprofessor, 2012)
Research methodology generally involves qualitative research or quantitative research, or a mixture of both. A quantitative research methodology involves the analysis of data collected from a large number of surveys or interviews. On the other hand, methodologies for qualitative research often involve using surveys or interviews to collect information about people — their attitudes, experiences and behaviors.
Qualitative Inquiry is a type of research that evolves as the researcher learns new aspects about the subject they are studying (Polit & Beck, 2017). Interviewing the subjects of the study about their individual experiences and outcomes leads the researcher to a conclusion or further investigation. This discussion board assesses qualitative research and if it is feasible for the topic chosen for burnout and staffing levels in the emergency department.
1. What are three things you learned about research methods in this video (100 words)?
The purpose of my research is to evaluate the validity of a language portfolio as a means for fostering self-regulated students using mixed methods design. I want to analyze both quantitative and qualitative data. Mixing the quantitative and qualitative methods allows me to interpret and answer my research question: How does a language portfolio support student growth, student’s autonomy, and self-assessment practice in a world language class?
The number and nature of cases studied in a qualitative research design must be provisional (Gobo, 2007), so the suggested number of participants in this study will be 27, representing three sectors of SMEs in Thailand. This number (27) is an appropriate number for the beginning of the research which 24 participants are identified as key informant and who will be selected by their owner/manager (3 participants), and the number of cases can change during the research until the data analysis is quite advanced. Mario Luis Small (2009) suggested that in a case model, the number of cases is unknown until the study is completed; if the case is conducted properly, the very last case examined will provide very little new or surprising information, so the objective is saturation. Three SMEs will be selected, being the three case studies that were considered as critical cases. The criteria for selection will be that the companies are registered as Thai SMEs and received an SMEs National Award from OSMEP in Thailand. The three categories represented will be the National Award, Outstanding Award, and Rising Star Award, and three cases will also be representative of the Production Sector, Service Sector and Trading Sector, respectively. There will be 9 participants for each case; 1 participant will be the owner-manager, 4 participants will be manager/ supervisors who are considered to
| 1. Use qualitative research methods and approaches in collecting and analyzing data. 2. Conduct qualitative research methods in education. 3. Critical in evaluating research reports. 4. Demonstrate ethical practices in collecting and analyzing data.
In psychology, answers to our questions are not as succinct as in other types of sciences, and the findings essentially depend upon the underlying epistemology used. This essay seeks to define and examine the fields of qualitative and quantitative research. It will address the different epistemologies and methodologies of each paradigm, and aim to give you a brief overview of the two main research methods underlying scientific knowledge.
