This first data set is from the Department of Labor Statistics. It provides data on ethnic and gender representation in the workforce by occupational category. It is in this data that the first conclusions can be drawn from analysis. The first conclusion that's because it's blatantly obvious an analysis is that white males dominate the professional Workforce comma especially in the case of professions that are above average salaries. Secondly, is that in several cases as is the case with women in Social Services, education, and health care, Hispanic workers in maintenance and grounds operations, and Asians in computer and mathematical occupations, are dominated by minority groups stereotypically associated with those professions.
1. What changes are occurring in our workforce today and are likely to continue into the future?
Meet Emily and Greg. Both are applying for jobs in the labor market, in Boston and Chicago. So are Lakisha and Jamal. Same job, same resumes - the only real difference is that two of the applicants are distinctly white, the other two are distinctly black. And yet, Emily and Greg had 10.08% chance of getting a callback, while Lakisha and Jamal have only a 6.70% chance (Bertrand). Perhaps this is just an isolated incident, though. It’s not like an employer would not hire someone based on just their name, after all. So take James and Julia Cabot. They are very similar, and they are
Discrimination is nothing new to our society or is it something that should be taken lightly and for many decades our Nation has endured many conflicts that have tested the will of Americans over the decades and it is evident that as we have become more diverse so too has our workforce. Although, we are in the twenty first century the goal is to understand why prejudice and discrimination is still so prevalent and how we can do better while trying to bring together our different backgrounds, skills, and experiences still has proven to be an issue that minorities are constantly fighting as they struggle to find there place in society. Through an array of well-educated researchers showing how diversity is nothing new to our society, but if we are to continue to grow and move forward we must be able to understand that with diversification we can foster a strong and inclusive economy that is built to last and nurture a nation that will continue to lead the world as standard setter.
I am very happy witht the progress that Vicky has made in her job so far. She has been with the Bureau about 8 months and she has become invaluable to us. She understands the division and bureau vision and direction. She is a real team player who actively participates in bureau meetings and activities such as coming up with a vision and mission statement for the PPI bureau.
Diversity is present in all aspects of life, its been major topics for cultures forever and helps with all social or cultural probems of diputes. When you have such a huge populations of peopel there are bound to be a lot of differneces and ways of looking at things so ther has to be understanding involved otherwise nothing gets resolved. the key is to be accepting to everytone and never judge anyone regardless of differences. Diversity is extremely importante; in the work place, school, or over all population diversity is the key that unites it all. With diversity you get people from all walks of life that share their unique stories or create opportunities for new insight to be shared. Diversity is important because it recognizes that
As a business manager in human relations you must understand the differences in cultures. The labor force in today’s society in the United States workforce is getting more racially and ethnically diverse, as the number of women are also increasing. Companies use human resources management to gain a competitive advantage. Companies can no longer take the traditional approach of depending on white males to form the core of the workforce. In today’s society managers must look broadly to use talent wherever it could be found. Managing diversity is a huge issue in today’s society because each culture has a different way to be handled. If managers can be effective at managing diversity in different cultures, they will have an easier time
Every work environment is full of different types of people. Every one person treats their job differently than the next. I have worked in plenty of places where I have seen people who are unique compared to one another. Some people really work hard and appreciate the opportunity they have been given. Others, however, take the job the received for granted, and abuse the privileges that have be given to them. I personally think hard work and dedication to the job I am currently working is important, but some would people disagree. Throughout my working experience, I have worked with many different types of people.
For the past two months I have applied for diverse jobs to keep me busy after I finish my degree, which is only two weeks away. I went for an interview with XPO Brands for a part time store manager position and I got the job, WOOHOO! Lavazza will open a pop-up shop in the Myer Centre CBD in September and for the next couple of weeks I will be trained and prepared for the grand opening. They are launching new coffee machines and pods, which I will demonstrate to the public. Additionally, offer samples of the coffee. I hope to see you around and I will make you as many cups of coffee as you want, haha.
The Diversity of the workplace will have a great impact on me as a doctor. People from different walks of life are becoming doctors in Canada- it is no longer field only composed of only white, heterosexual males. For example, there are many immigrant doctors who practice in Canada, especially here in the Niagara Region. I, as a young, Nigerian-Canadian, female Muslim, should not have to worry about discrimination or the "glass ceiling effect" when I enter the workplace. I will be able to work with other professionals, and contribute to the medical field to the best of my ability, with no worries.
The definition of psychology is the science of behavior and mental processes. With this definition it is safe to assume that those who study under this field should be understanding. However, this is not entirely true, the field of psychology has an imbalance of genders. An article written by three women psychologists: Fionnuala Murphy, Dorothy Bishop and Natasha Sigala found several examples in which women are under minded and taken advantage of in the field of psychology. The issue at hand is that women are being thought of as inadequate because of their gender when in retrospect women are just as capable as conducting research and
In a world where diversity is becoming more common than not, it still seems to be the cause of some people being the minority in the work place. Diversity is defined as being a state of variety or a range of different things. A business can be diverse in a way that their people present different skill sets. In order to grow and learn, a business must be run with a diverse group of people teaching their skills, expanding their horizons and putting their passion to the test to make sure their business is successful in every way. People can be diverse in the way that they look or the way that they think or speak. If there was no diversity in the work place, then there would be nothing to
Today when you look at our country you think of it a somewhat of a melting pot or a mixed and diverse population. When you look at the populations, even in small towns you see multiple different races and cultures. This then leads to our workforce where you see that same type of diverse culture entering the workforce in the communities they live in and the ones around them. Our workforce hasn’t only changed to multicultural, it also has more and more woman as well.. If we look back 50 years you see that woman and individuals with a race other than caucasian had a very hard time finding a place where they would be welcomed in the workforce. Today woman, our international population, and races other than caucasian are finding the task of working to be a little easier. (Older Workers, 2008) Today we have programs in high schools and college that allow international students to go to college, work, and live here with an overall acceptance from Americans. Our diverse population also includes the age that we work. With improved healthcare and the advances in technology, men and women are working well into their senior years. Some may debate that it is because they have to with our declining economy, but the fact still remains that they are able to continue in the workforce. With all of these factors it is very important that we work together to improve our communication abilities through our school building by using the application of diverse skills (Linn, 2013).
Different people see diversity from different perspective. Its concept is based on acceptance and respect. It means understanding the fact that every individual is special, and acknowledging the differences between people. These difference may be attributed to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious believes, political believes, or other philosophy. Diversity encompasses the analysis of these differences in a very safe, positive and supportive environment. The understanding between every individual should be looked beyond tolerating one another, it should be built on supporting and celebrating the immeasurable features of diversity that is found within everyone. [1]
Equality has always been a huge topic at the forefront of America for many years. Whether it is equality for races, religion, gender or sexual orientation, people just desire for life to be equal and fair. Although much has changed and is continuously changing, women still struggle to be seen as equivalent to men in the American workforce. Bound by a wage gap that is bias towards the female species, women have to battle different factors which lead to inequivalent compensation. There are wage gaps stimulating from gender within the American workforce due to caregiving duties; which plays a major role in effecting women’s compensation, along with experience and education being overlooked in comparison to males; a female’s counterpart, and some wage gap issues are just plain out a result of discrimination.
Diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. This means understanding that every individual is unique, and noticing their individual uniqueness. This can be different race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies and exploring these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual. The U.S Department of Interior defines diversity as “ used broadly to refer to many demographic variables, including, but not limited to, race, religion, color, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, age, education, geographic origin, and skill characteristics. America 's diversity has given this country its unique strength, resilience and richness.”
