Many do not take the time to sit and reflect on ourselves. However, understanding yourself and identifying personal strengths and weaknesses will help you to develop as a leader. Often times it is easier to point out other’s strengths than to point out your own. Chapter four of Exploring Leadership by Komives describes tools to discover your traits and how to use them. The most important points discussed was mindfulness, managing your nonstrengths, and values. One of the first ways a person can discover themselves is through mindfulness. As Boyatzis and McKee (2005) would say “Mindfulness starts with self-awareness: knowing yourself enables you to make choices about how you respond to people and situations” (pg 120). They define mindfulness as “the capacity to be fully aware of all that one experiences inside the self–body, mind, heart, spirit–and to pay full attention to what is happening around us” (pg 113). I fully agree, in order to understand yourself truly, a person must be fully aware of everything happening in their life. They must be able to think and question why is this occurring, and …show more content…
All these skills can be applied to my life right now. As I learn how to become a better leader, I must first understand myself. Being mindful will not only help me to stay aware and alert in business but in my everyday life. Being mindful is a continual process that never ends. Managing my weakness is also continuous. Every day I show off my strengths and I work on my weaknesses. Whether it is in school, work, or in my personal life I have embraced these flaws and will always work hard to manage them. My values are what keeps me going. As I become more versed, I will be able to create new values. Overall, I use all the points Komives’ mentioned every day because it’s about knowing myself. Every day I develop a deeper understanding of who I
To become an effective leader, a leader needs to be self-aware of their personal strengths and weaknesses (Marquis and Huston 2009). Therefore, a SWOT analysis [Appendix1] was performed to identify the four aspects of my “strength”, “weakness”, “opportunity” and “threats”. For this assignment, I will use one aspect of my strengths “good listener” and one aspect of my weaknesses “lack of
In presenting a theory about myself as a leader, I will attempt to draw conclusions about my strengths and weakness as a leader based on the things learned in this class. I will speculate on a reflective leadership best-self-portrait through my work experiences that draw on my interpersonal resources for vision. Recognizing my talents and shortcomings will help develop both micro and macro levels of resource development needed to reach my full potential.
Throughout this course, I have learned several things about myself as a leader and about a leader in general. I feel like I now have the ability to point out many strengths and weaknesses I did not notice before. Strengths such as being able to find better ways of doing certain things, spot things that may or may not be really working, motivating team members, and working great under pressure. Some of my weaknesses include resisting change, constantly working within a group, because I always tend to feel like I'm doing either all or most of the work, and sometimes micro managing in an attempt to help/coach closely. Sometimes the micro-managing is unattended but at the same some things don't get right in time unless you keep a close eye on it.
For me to be an effective leader, I must first evaluate my strengths. I took the Gallup 2.0 Strength Finder report which showed my strengths in an insight and action planning guide. The results indicated the top five themes for me were input, learner, responsibility, maximizer and arranger. I believe the
Quoted by Ronald Reagan “The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.” A manager gets things done via planning and delegation. Tasks are usually assigned and results are obtained by other efforts. A leader gets things done by holding a vision, modeling behaviors and usually have very inspiring actions. A manager is defined as, “An individual who is in charge of a certain group or tasks” (Business Dictionary). A leader is defined as “The person who leads or commands a group, organizations” (Business Dictionary).
In order for someone to be an effective leader, one would have to bestow certain skills and characteristics or some can be obtained over a period of time. Various assessments and questionnaires are designed to measure and give insight on certain skills or traits an individual may have. Some of those assessments include the skills inventory, leadership trait questionnaire, style questionnaire, leadership questionnaire, least preferred coworker, path goal, LMX, and the authentic leadership self-assessment. By conducting these questionnaires and assessments, not
1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
2- Taking self-assessments allow for recognition and understanding concerning one-self and the qualities possessed. Various approaches to leadership, decision-making, and personality traits greatly influence communication, motivation and management abilities within an organization. These skills can be learned and enhanced. Understanding how these styles impact others can empower leaders to increase organizational performance and create an improved work environment. Great leaders have impacted our societies and organizations. They have shared necessary guidelines for increasing leadership skills.
Part of being a leader is being aware of one’s strengths. This includes core strengths and strengths that need to be augmented or developed. At the same time, a leader must be aware of their weaknesses. Identifying one’s strengths and weaknesses can be accomplished through assessments that are completed by self. Strengths and weaknesses can also be recognized through assessments that are completed by others.
As a leader that believes in the value of self-awareness and strengths-based philosophy, I believe we should always reflect and constructively act on our reflection in order to best find ways for mature growth. For example, I believe I am good at identifying risks, finding out of the box solutions, seeing opportunities, and acting on them. I am not as good, however, in spotting future issues, where the data has yet to be compiled. Understanding that, you should expect me to help you find what you are good at, cultivate it, and then help you to find resources to augment your
According to the personal development plan that I conducted, I found myself with various leadership traits such as commitment, and flexibility, where I can handle all my assignments correctly and on time. I need to be tolerant and avoid being temperament. Lastly, I also need to have faith in myself and believe that I can do what am supposed to do perfectly without
According to Sullivan and Decker (2009), leadership is influencing others into working toward accomplishing a common goal. Some people are born with an innate leadership quality within them. Others require learning leadership and management skills. It takes a certain personality trait that makes them a natural leader. Intelligence, personality, and abilities are three categories of the trait theory that is a part of the profile of successful leaders (Sullivan & Decker, 2009). I will discuss my personal views of leadership. It will
In my reflections as I prepared to write this paper, I came to the realization that leadership is much more complex especially since the paper requires that I focus on a few traits. In an effort to make it simple, I wrote down the traits that came to mind and in process had over 10 important traits but an even bigger challenge was on how to narrow them down to 3 or 4 and this is the place that required a good deal of reflection. Eventually, however, I had to prioritize them since in any case; it is not possible to get a leader that has all the traits. As I thought of the various leaders who have inspired me, I noticed that while they strived to provide the best leadership by focusing on their strong points, they still had their weaknesses. To me this provided a justification for at least identifying key desirable traits and thereafter working to improve them. I did manage to settle on four traits, which for me are indispensible if a leader or a leadership is to become effective.
This paper will incorporate four of the self-assessment I completed (Leadership, 2004). They are as follows; social motives in the work setting, my leadership styles, emotional intelligence, and team excellence. I will also identify and discuss my leadership characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. We must first understand what leadership means. To lead, nonetheless, is to excite, to impact, and to inspire. Successful leaders move others to draw in incredibleness, to stretch out themselves and to go past their perform work necessities by producing innovative thoughts. It has been said that directors are individuals who do things right and leaders are individuals who make the best choice." This refinement is to some degree exaggerated since successful leaders do a considerable measure of overseeing and compelling chiefs need to lead.
Using the Strength Finders 2.0 Assessment, I was able to identify my personal strengths, which would identify my personal leadership skills. My strength assessment results where Harmony, Consistency, Empathy, Achiever, and Belief. This paper will identify each strength, how they relate to my leadership style and approach to leadership.
