My computing innovation represented by my computational artifact is Fitbit. Fitbit was created in San Francisco, California by a group of inventors with knowledge in technology (1). Fitbit is a device that is worn, usually on the wrist, that collects data that includes the amount of calories you burn, steps climbed, distance traveled, etc (4). With the data that is collected there is an app that stores it. The Fitbit app keeps all of the data collected by the hardware and compiles it into graphs and charts so it is convenient to view the collected data (1). 2b. I created my computational artifact, representing the Fitbit and associated app, by using the online editing website; Canva (3). When using the online editing website I was able to …show more content…
A beneficial effect of Fitbit is that it tracks any activity that is done, which lets the user know about their health and progress, if any, that is made (2). The odds of a Fitbit user caring about their general health are fairly high. With fitbit, the user knows what their heart rate is which can be helpful if a user has a heart condition in which they can not overexert themselves during an activity. Fitbit also lets the user know how well they sleep and how many hours that were slept (7). This useful information has an effect on society in which the user will have knowledge of their overall health and will know if they are unhealthy and/or have a possible abnormal heartbeat or rest period. With this information they will be able to talk to a doctor and get medical help if necessary. A harmful effect of Fitbit is that it could be inaccurate in providing the user with correct data. When someone buys any type of fitness tracker, accuracy is probably one of the top things on a list of musts this device must have. A study was conducted in which the Fitbit heart rate monitor was inaccurate by 20 beats per minute (5). People that have a heart condition can be negatively affected by this which could put their health at risk …show more content…
Data that the fitbit uses is from the actual Fitbit itself and the Fitbit app that has to be downloaded for the user to view their everyday health. The Fitbit collects data which can include distance traveled, hours slept, calories burned, heart rate, and a few other things through intricate hardware in the actual fitbit itself (1). The data that is collected is stored on the fitbit (1). When the Fitbit connects to internet access the data that was collected and stored is sent to the Fitbit app in which the data is then transformed into convenient graphs, charts, and other ways to easily understand the possible confusing but helpful data that was collected (1). One data privacy is that Fitbit allows users to sync the Fitbit with other mobile apps other than the Fitbit app. These other mobile apps can keep track of the location of where the Fitbit goes; usually along with the user. An example of an app like this is Strava which is responsible for exposing a U.S. military base when a global heat map of where users of the app traveled was updated in November of 2017 (8). Military personnel did not know that this location tracking app, when synced with a Fitbit, could be used to reveal secret military operations/bases by tracking people’s exercise routines (8). Even people who are not in the military can fall victim to location privacy due to location tracking apps that can be synced with the Fitbit device
If you are tracking your health and fitness progress using Fitbit, you may want to stop. A new study has found Fitbit to be inaccurate, causing concerns for the company. This comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed against Fitbit over the data inaccuracy the smart device provides. Is Fitbit a scam? The findings of the device’s woes are supported by two scientific studies. However, the company insists that both studies are biased. Could the war against smart device accuracy lead to an investigation of the Apple Watch?
The best part of the Fitbit is not the watch itself, but the app. The app syncs with your device via Bluetooth and keeps track with the device throughout the day. I quite enjoy this feature as it allows me to wear the device and not worry about keeping track of my steps, my sleep, and my heart rate.
The significance of Garmin Vivofit 3 is the combination of waterproof and disposable coin battery. Since users can wear the Vivofit 3 even in the shower and don’t need to take it off to charge, they can wear it all the time in one year, which means users will not miss out any activities (such as steps) or lose the band when they take it off. The reason why I think it’s significant is that I had a Fitbit band. It’s not waterproof, so I need to take it off every day before shower. Also, I need to take if off and recharge it every few days. The problem was, the Fitbit band is really difficult to snap on. I only used it for three months because it was so inconvenient. From user’s perspective, I don’t want a complicated band that track a lot of
FitBit is a company that creates watch like devises that monitor your heart rate, hours you’ve slept and steps you’ve taken and climbed. This wireless device is used to inform its wearer if their daily routine is cutting it to keep them living healthy.
Picture this in you head, a wristband any color from blue to yellow and wearing it wherever you go to benefit the body. Well that time is now, because in the early 2016 Oral Roberts University made it a requirement for all freshmen’s to wear Fitbit to help maintain health fitness and personal information. The university concludes it’s a physical education course that will notify what kind of activity the students will be doing in and out of the campus. By doing so, most undergrads are tracked by how much they eat, sleep, and walk over 10,000 steps. Thanks to this technology, more and more people are participating in this program to exercise right and being well fit. Some viewers believe that wearing the Fitbit is a significant thing to the campus, but there is a huge disadvantage of what it can do.
Park and Friedman were able to ship around 5,000 units with a further 20,000 orders on the books. Park and Friedman raised more money for their product from Brad Field and teamed up with Best Buy. Fitbit products are now found in 650 Best Buys and thousands of retail stores worldwide. The first tracker was reviewed as “pretty good”. In 2011 Fitbit was improved by adding an altimeter, digital clock and a stopwatch. In 2012 Fitbit One and Fitbit Zip were the first wireless fitness trackers to use Bluetooth 4.0/ Bluetooth Smart. This model allowed people to sync their Fitbit with IOS and Android as well as the Fitbit website. In 2013 Fitbit created a wearable bracelet: Fitbit Flex. Although the product was not entirely successful. The wristband was irritating people’s skin due to the nickel in the product. This resulted in a recall in 2014 and the irritating factor can still be a problem in some of their products today.
Eric and James were able to create a wearable technology that could track people’s fitness activities with minimal effort from the user. Currently, Fitbit’s mission statement is “To empower and inspire you to live a healthier, more active life. We design products that
Here I am going to include my experience with the Fitbit Surge. First I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the product for about a week. Then I lost my interest. Basically the device counts step, tracks your sleep, etc. That's about it. It is basically a glorified watch and all it does is monitor stuff but it is never 100% accurate. Week 2 of owning the Fitbit my device started acting up. Notifications didn't sync properly, the battery didn't last as long as it is advertised to last, my stats wouldn't sync with my phone so I lost days’ worth of information, and when it did receive notifications it just kept vibrating and wouldn't stop until you read the
I agree with many of the points you have made throughout your discussion, but I have some alternate views. In regards to the Fitbit data being collected by an employer, I agree that company property in most cases is subject to monitoring and the collection of data. However, I think without the consent of the employee, the employer may find themselves in a sticky situation legally because it may violate HIPAA. Regardless of the legal concerns, there is an ethical concern when it comes to an employer collecting personal health information about employees potentially without their knowledge or consent. In most cases, companies would rather not know personal health information about their employees because it could be used against the employer
Expected technological advancements in health products are likely to contribute to greater spending on health. The FitBit as a technological health device shall greatly meet local consumer’s needs.

Dawn has definitely made fitness a lifestyle thanks to her trusty Fitbit. This piece of wearable technology helps Dawn go the extra mile (or miles, in this case). She says the Fitbit helps her by acting as a digital pedometer and is packed with additional features such as sleep monitoring and other personal metrics, which she easily tracks on her IPad. And the result? Dawn has consistently stayed motivated to improve her health and fitness game through being able to track all her activity, exercise, food, and sleep. This time last year, Dawn was walking less than 10,000 steps a day. As of now, her daily goal has shot up to 15,000 to 20,000 steps. The Fitbit vibrates to let Dawn know that she’s reached her step goal for the day is a small victory

Maximizing my steps became a game. I looked for simple ways to keep moving (like walking around while waiting to be seated for my next meal), and competed with myself to beat the prior day 's count by a few steps.
