In module 3, I would like to focus on three main readings that thought me a lot about how people are affected by different situations depending on their race, gender or sexuality. The first reading is “The Problem That has No Name”, it was very surprising to me to read about how women decided to give up everything to become good wives. The next reading is called “Why Gender Equality Stalled”, this article made by The New York Times magazine demonstrate how the people in the United States changed their opinion about the roles of women and men inside the household, but can not do much because of the limited options jobs offer. The last reading is “Dangerous intersections”, in this reading I learned that when gender is linked to race it become harder for that person to get the support it needs. These readings are very interesting to me because even though they are not addressing the same problem, they all are interconnected by the same reason: women’s struggle to reach equality within society. In the reading “The Problem That has No Name”, I was surprised to read how the majority of women started to see marriage as the best option they could have in life, and that having kids, a nice house, etc was a dream coming true for most of them. In the 1950’s many women started to drop out of college or only went to college to get a husband, as Betty Friedan stated, “The proportion of women attending college in comparison with men dropped from 47% in 1920 to 35% in 1958”. It was
Living in peace needs equality of men and women because humans don’t fight if all humans have equality. Everyone has a chance to get peace and happiness, but some people cannot because of custom. For example, in the past, women had to work for men, and there was a gender discrimination. From 19th to early 20th century, women fought against women’s issues such as education, economic, violence, and abortion because women’s position is very low and weak, so they couldn’t have decision rights. However, the society became better as the years went by. The comparison between past and present history shows the current situation of gender issues in the workplace and in education, and results shows how gender equality is important for peace.
Gender inequality plays a critical role when it comes to social progress. As a woman,
Many people are often misinformed or given bad first impressions of feminism. However, feminism is equal rights for all people of different race, sex, gender, and sexuality. Many of the people that give feminism a bad name, include a self-proclaimed feminist that is running for presidency, and meninists who are satirical equal rights activists. In reality, feminism is pro-gender equality and opportunities for all types of people.
Discussions about gender and race equality are a big part of our daily lives; however, the fact that this is even a discussion might be a problem in itself. Woman or man, black, white or yellow, were words conjured up by scientists to classify species just as german shepherd and poodle were. They were not meant to be used as a way to label people in society, with regards to who they are or what they do. Labels and categories were meant for food, utensils, and lab settings, not for people in society. So why is it that from a young age we are taught that there is a separate bathroom for men and women, that most guys are attracted to girls and girls to guys, that blue is for boys and pink is for girls, that anyone that has a different shaped
Their biological aspects exclusively distinguish males and Females; genetically, females have two X chromosomes while males have an X and Y chromosome. These biological differences are what divide the human population into males and females. Unfortunately humankind has the mind set that there’s something “natural” about gender distinction because biology makes one sex different from the other. What they don’t know is gender is the personal traits and social positions that members of a society attach to being female or male. Gender is not a trait we are born with, rather it is a “brand” to which we are labeled with. It refers to the psychological, social, cultural, and behavioral characteristics that are being associated with being a female or male. Gender involves hierarchy, ranking men and women unfairly in terms of power, wealth, and other resources. Although men and women have became more equal in today’s time, Turkey still faces unequal complications regarding gender relations; the lives of Turkish males and females are being shaped in their choice of careers, in the household, and their individual behaviors.
Feminism historically has only gazed upon the topic of equality in their activism and debate. Often time 's, western feminists themselves do not contemplate how they are privileged in the fact that they are able to and allowed to, advocate for equality for women. Internationally, this is not the case. Rather women are fighting just to be included and seen in the eyes of men on stages that culturally they have never been before. In politics, globally women are fighting for their faces to be the ones that are seen as politicians, not men who do not see women 's issues on the same level as other issues. In the economy, women are working towards holding higher positions and breaking the glass ceiling that holds them back as well as breaking
“We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality. It isn 't a reality yet. Today, women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but the average working woman earns only seventy-seven percent of what the average working man makes. But unless women and men both say this is unacceptable, things will not change” stated Grammy Award winner, Beyoncé (Knowles-Carter 34). Although in the twenty-first century, women are still fighting for equality to simply be paid the same amount as men. The main causes of this gender inequality include education level, gender discrimination, and occupational segregation; all of which have been deemed as false, discriminatory conclusions. Contrasting incomes between genders impacts not only women, but also society, families, and individuals. One’s income should not be based off of gender, but rather women and men should have equal earnings.
This paper will discuss gender roles and gender equality in today’s society in comparison to the society of the first, second, and third waves of feminism. Present-day society should be growing in order to be conscious of individuals who voice themselves as male, bisexual, transgender, female, queer, intersex, lesbian, other, the list is unlimited. However, society is unfortunately stuck in a black and white world and does not want to change; this essentially makes it difficult for those who are deemed as unacceptable because they do not conform the “black and white, female/male” world. Problems regarding gender do not just stop at roles; society also has a setback with gender equality. Unfortunately, this predicament started in the first wave of feminism (19th century) and still occurs in the real world as well as the virtual world through commercials, magazines, and social media, etc.
Throughout the past few decades, the gender inequality discourse have became a dominant feature of international, national and local policy debate on the subject of economic development. This policy concern has emerged as an area of scholarly research which seeks to show that improving gender equity leads to economic growth.
In today’s society, we often see many state that one specific gender has more advantages and privileges than that of its respective counterpart. However, this is simply not the case. The issue that is in question is gender equality. This is a social issue has been addressed in both logical/philosophical literature and mass media sources. You see, there’s this preconceived notion that the male gender has more benefits and advantages than the female gender. However, this is simply not true at all, as both genders, male and female, equally have the same opportunities to pursue whatever it is that they like. Stereotypically, women are known as the ones to stay home, cook, and clean, while the men are out working. However, times are changing. The outlook on women are also changing. Due to the rise and superiority of social media in the 21st century, women and girls worldwide have been given a new uplifting voice that has never been seen before. Despite this new voice, there are cases of gender disparities in various occupations and industries.
Centuries after another and now the present, the twenty-first century still faces a huge issue towards the acceptance on gender equality. Nonetheless, women are unappreciated in today’s society’s workforce. But for Sheryl Sandberg who wrote the article “Lean In”, believes that any women in the world could be whoever they want to be. Sandberg inspires many girls of today’s generation for being a successful woman who followed her dreams and not let inequalities and gender roles affect her. Through Sandberg’s hard work, she became the COO of Facebook and eventually became a billionaire. Her successful story was shared on her essay where she stated encouraging aspects of how women should be. Such as, leaning in to their careers instead of stepping back to focus on family. In addition, Sandberg concludes that women shouldn’t be afraid of pursuing their ambition because of the negative views that they may receive or even the fear of failing. In other hand, the author of “Beyond Lean In”, Bell Hooks argues that leaning in is maybe not for everyone. Hooks criticizes Sandberg about her views of how women should be because Hooks thinks that Sandberg did not consider the women with different backgrounds. Furthermore, Hooks did not ignore the fact that some women struggles to succeed on the workforce due to their race and social class. Hooks points out a very legitimate fact because she actually look at different types of women while Sandberg might not be able to relate to that
Feminism is a global movement focused on obtaining equality between the sexes. Feminists believe there to be a hierarchal gap between the sexes, with men being viewed as more substantial than women. According to an article in Independent, “the pay gap between male and female salaries in the UK is 20%.” (Musaddique, S. (2017, October 16) Gender pay gap: UK women are now working ‘for free’ for the rest of the year. Independent). Feminists are working to achieve equality, not only in an economic sense but also politically and socially.
“A woman is human. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man. Likewise, she is never less. Equality is a given. A woman is human” (Nazarian 2010) Women have been a face of oppression for many years, gender segregation has also been prominent in all societies for many years. Historically, women have never been the dominant gender in roles of occupation and wages. Gender segregation has impacted the gender wage gap, that has been ongoing since the beginning of time. Patriarchy will be touched on, being the outlook the majority of the population practices, gender roles and lastly the never-ending gender wage gap. The statistics of the progress of the narrowing of the gender wage gap will be examined, compared and contrasted. Women tend to face the lack of high power positions in society, less formal education and part-time work
Equality is a major topic of discussion amongst academics and the wider population as a whole. Different groups have been fighting for equal rights in many different ways in many different organisations, with varying success for the last century and beyond. In a business/managerial sense, there is much debate about the gaps between certain social groups regarding the roles in which they occupy within an organisation, with a considerable amount of literature focussing on the space between men and women, namely the gender pay gap and ‘the glass ceiling’.
Gender equality refers to sexual equality that men and women should receive equal treatment as well as equal pay in the work place. Nor should they be discriminated against based on their gender. It can also be referred to as equality of the genders. It basically seeks to create equality in law and in social situations. Gender equality is also working to be present in political activities and securing equal pay in the work place. Gender inequality has gotten a lot better over the years and continues to be making progress towards becoming completely equal.
