Health Care Teamwork

Decent Essays

Literature often cites strong emphasis on effective teamwork inclusive of the radiographer, other relevant health professionals, and the patient is fundamental to providing patients ethical, efficient, and safe treatment within the field of medical radiations. An effective team is described as one that prioritizes communication of observations, expertise and decision making of all related health professionals (World Health Organisation, u.d). The team must also appropriately integrate the patients needs and preferences into their health care plan and pays attention to their own personal observations (Griner AC, Knevel E, editors, 2003). This essay aims to analyse the influence of teamwork in a health care setting using clinical research. It will conclude: Strong teamwork relieves unnecessary workload stress on …show more content…

Within the medical imaging practice this may result in a reduction in unnecessary exposures, as well as mitigation of average exposure dose creep. A study conducted by the ‘MedTeam’s project introduced a required team based structure into a range of hospital, and showed a significant decrease in clinical error rate from 30.9% to 4.4% (Morey, SImon, Jay, Wears, Salisbury, Dukes, Berns, 2002). These errors ranged from failure to report crucial patient vitals to improper contact precaution, but such errors extend into the medical imaging practice. This is seen when another study attributed aspects of poor teamwork as reasons for an approximate 8% of radiographic film repeat in a hospital (James Noia, Godfrey Isouard BD, Jerzey Mirceki, 2005). The implementation of team based health care is show to be relevant in reducing unnecessary exposure to patients and maintaining acceptable exposure levels; producing high quality images while minimising harm to the
