An effective team is described as one that prioritizes communication of observations, expertise and decision making of all related health professionals (World Health Organisation, u.d). The team must also appropriately integrate the patients needs and preferences into their health care plan and pays attention to their own personal observations (Griner AC, Knevel E, editors, 2003). Team work is at the centre of clinical practice in radiography. It is the core structure that allows the efficient flow of work whilst still providing patient-centred care. There must be an understanding that a team is not merely a group of people working in proximity to each other; but it is a group of people who use the division of labour and an understanding of each other’s role in the team to work in a rational and proficient manner. This essay will reflect on the team building I participated in and its correlation to my Belbin personality team roles. I will also explore the importance of this in practice, in terms of patient centred care and legislation. Using other personality questionnaires, I will consider Belbin’s ability to reflect my own roles and question if another method would be more accurate in doing this.

“Running a health care organization is a team sport. It is very important that all members of the team-whether on the medical staff, in management or on the board-understand the role of governance and what constitutes effective governance” (Arnwine, 2002). Running a hospital is a difficult task. Several factors need to be seriously thought of and considered in every decision and undertaking. Unfortunately, all the three important factors in governing a hospital is not always in harmony. As likened to a team sport, if the three major components are not working with each other as a team, there will be tension and a great divide will be experienced. And often times, the patients will be in the middle and will be greatly impacted.
