Once believed to be a low-stressed profession, ‘teaching’ was the most pleasant occupation with less workloads and more flexibility. But today, studies reveal that the teachers undergo a high amount of stress specially the university teachers. Teaching is such a kind of unique profession in which the expectations of student’s guardians are very high regarding to the student’s educational progress, future carrier and about the establishment of the personalities of students along with education (Wilson, 2002). The present pilot study was conducted to identify the factors causing stress among the faculty of Graduate and Post Graduate colleges in Hyderabad, administering a questionnaire. A few coping strategies used by the faculty members to combat stress are also reviewed. Through the conclusions drawn from this study, it can be suggested that the management of the colleges should focus on three things, causes of stress, effects of stress and remedial measures, to reduce the occupational stress of the faculty members. Care should be taken to identify the potential of the faculty members and recognize all of them to be equally important for the student development in particular and college development at large.
This research is useful for not only the faculty members but also for the management and administration of colleges and for the students to some extent. Key words: Occupational stress, Causes of stress, Emotional stress, coping strategies, Stress management.
It is important to know how to manage stress in academic life as it is learning about how to balance work and academic life. It is also important for students after graduating and creates self-awareness such as weakness in them.
Although the stress of college students is largely present, it is just another part of college. The real epidemic here besides added pressure on female students is how students as a whole can reduce the amount of stress that is put on them by personal practices. Nowadays there are so many problem in the schools of America. The biggest problem school faces is stress. Stress is a state of mental emotional strain or tension on the brain or body. One of the ways kids usually get stressed is from homework. Teachers today assign about one homework sheet for each class which means we get at least seven items of homework to take home a day. Another area of stress for students is grades. Students feel a lot of pressure from their parents and teachers to get good grades. If students don’t get passing grades, they have to redo the classes and this is very stressful. Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. Stress is something you cannot avoid in college and every student experiences. College creates a great amount of stress than high school with more responsibilities, assignments, expectations from others to succeed, and tight time schedules. Stress presents itself in college careers, created by various factors, but what are the effects of stress on the college students?

When it comes to the reality of the stress pandemic, it is not the reaction itself that is the problem. Rather, it is the way we deal with stress that determines the effects of stress on our mind and body. In fact, it is stated in Feldman (2009), “our attempts to overcome stress may produce biological and physiological responses that result in health problems” (p. 417). Therefore, it is always prudent to try to find ways to deal with stress effectively before it takes an irreversible toll on us. It is predictably higher among college students, freshmans in particular, because of the extreme expectations set upon them by their parents and, of course, society.
