Motivation
Motivation is a great noun. This word has inspired some songs, recording artist Kelly Rolland wrote a song about how she wants to be someone’s motivation. Each individual is motivated by different factors, money, power or love. Everybody exhibits various behaviors since everybody has differential reasons for behaving a certain way. Julia Stewart is a good role model in generating employee engagement and motivation within her company by job crafting and job enrichment. Julia Stewart was mindful of the challenging role of fitting big shoes as VP of a thousand restaurants. She worked hard developing her low performing restaurants in South Central LA. Motivation is having a reason or reasons to act/behave in a particular way. It creates “drive” in people whether it is in pursuit of a goal, or the need to complete an activity. It produces enthusiasm and a willingness to achieve in both a work environment and in your personal life. Motivation can be increased and decreased in line with the incentives on offer.
I chose motivation as my construct because I am very curious at what drives people and keeps them on track to reach goals, deadlines, and thing of this nature. Motivation of course is not something that can be measured, nor could it possibly measured accurately. First motivation can be defined in multiple ways to different people. Internal and external influences that fuel desire and energy in people to be continually involved and faithful to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to attain a goal. Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. Motivation is what causes us to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge. (Cherry, 2016) Motivation plays the role in everyday lives. Ones motivation to do something differs from ones feels and the type of motivation towards the action that is being done. By studying motivation, we learn what gives our behavior its purpose, direction and sustainability. (Bond & McConkey, 2001, p. 6.3).
Motivation is the drive someone has to complete a task. The ingredients of motivation are combined with many factors which include simplicity, attitude, the people that we associate and hang around with, the way we think, how much we know ourselves, the way we help other people and so much more.
Motivation is the desire or want to do things. It is the psychological reason behind wanting or achieving something. In our daily lives, motivation plays a key part in how we operate at work, at home, and even in our leisure activities. Without motivation we would have trouble getting tasks completed.
Motivation is the force that makes us do things: this is a result of our individual needs being satisfied (or met) so that we have inspiration to complete the task.
Motivation can be defined as the internal state of individual’s mind that enable individual and directs the behaviour of the individuals. Motivation makes the individual to do something. It is defined as the individual’s willingness to intensity efforts to achieve the goals.
What is motivation? As manager’s, motivation is one of the most vital and crucial assets to possess in managing a business. This drive is a critical tool to use in the work place and determine the success or failure of an organization. Motivation is a driving force that initiates and directs behavior. In other words, motivation is an internal energy that drives an individual to do something in order to achieve a certain goal. Therefore, creating a motivating environment in the workplace will lead to happy employees. Creating a work environment like this, managers can expect low staff turnovers, improved productivity, happy customers, and better financial performance. Therefore, the input of motivation use towards employees determines the output efficiency of the company. However, everyone involved in an organization is motivated differently. Everybody has their own individual needs in regards to motivation. Depending on how motivated a person is, determines the effort that individual puts into the work and therefore, how productive they are.
Motivation is defined as having a strong reason to act or accomplish something. This reason to act could be a variety of things. The motivation one receives can also come in many forms. For some, the act for themselves; others act for someone else. Still others receive their motivation from another who has complete faith in them to accomplish their task. In the epic poem The Odyssey, by the Greek poet Homer, the main character, Odysseus, is motivated to return home by the courage he receives from the goddess, Athena.
Motivation on the other hand is referred to as: “the forces within a person that affect the direction, intensity and persistence of voluntary behaviour. Motivated employees are willing to exert a particular level of effort (intensity), for a certain amount of time (persistence), towards a particular goal (direction). Motivation is one of the four essential drivers of individual behaviour and performance”. (McShane et.al, 2013, pg. 138). In other words, motivation is in the form of things that stimulates us, and further enhances our knowledge. People do things, not because they have to, but because they’re somewhat interested in the activity or the task that they have to do, and people often learn from these activities, get the results that they want, thus, making them strive to continue working.
