During my coursework learning about the variety of leadership styles, I have been able to take something positive away from each style. My personal preference is the "participative leadership style" and the most likely choice for me to use when in a leadership role. For instance, I learned from each style that there will be something events that would be applicable given the work environment and situation at hand for the proper style. Because there are instances where management will have to utilize a combination of leadership styles are necessary to reach a common objective and goal. While involved in this coursework and gaining knowledge in utilizing the different styles, I have learned to step "outside the comfort zone" and create and/or seize opportunities that will allow me to apply the difference styles of leadership. In identifying my own leadership style (participative), I discovered that there where instances that I would have to use a little of all styles.
I think the best way for me to improve my choice of leadership style and to know when to apply the other styles will be to continuous expose myself and participate in formal and informal education classes. Moreover, volunteer for additional responsibilities that will place me in a position that requires me to utilize the knowledge that I have obtain from this coursework.
As I observe and learn from my own senior management and peers through questions, application and/or coaching; this will provide opportunities for me to constantly improve. As a leader and being positioned between the demands of management, team and the workers; leadership skills must include the ability to juggle the various priorities while keeping performance high and cost under control. My leadership style is about how I treat under me with respect, approachable and willing to listen with different suggestions in decision making. I want to have a cooperative teamwork, little supervision, and motivation with professionalism. There is always room for training in developing skills and expertise and encouragement to go above and beyond.
Coaching leaders help employees by identifying their unique strengths and weaknesses. They encourage employees to establish long-term goals. Coaching style is used least often because many leaders don’t have time to teach people and help them grow. Every leader needs to know when and how to display a particular approach of leadership within a group. Leadership strategies define every leader’s personal leadership style. Based on the reading it is hard to give a single leadership style or even a combination of leadership styles because there are so many different levels of productions and management for this project. With that in mind, leadership theory has identified four management styles--authoritarian, democratic, participatory, and laissez-faire. In reflecting on my one specific leadership style is difficult because my leadership style sometimes changes depending upon the particular employee I am leading, the situations I am faced with and what I am trying to accomplish. Being the second in command of a small police agency with only twenty-two sworn officers, as well as six non-sworn employees, they all have small differences from one another. These employee differences vary widely from generational, skill sets, needs, wants and personal motivations. One particular leadership style may work well with one employee I am trying to get to complete a specific task while that leadership style may cause another employee to resist or shut down. I believe one of the true characteristics of a strong leader is the ability to recognize and appreciate the differences between my subordinates and then lead them based upon the style that they will best respond to in order to succeed.

Van Wart writes “….a bewildering number of theories have been advanced to explain a variety of aspects of leadership, each with its own partial wisdom or advantages” (p.72). In terms of leadership styles a wide variety exists for one to employ (Boykins, 2013). There isn’t firm consensus as to which styles prove to be the most effective. Different situations call for different approaches. In the article, Empirical Study of Leadership Styles, it discusses several leadership styles that I can relate to.
