Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in Management There are many management styles when it comes to an effective work environment. In correctional officers jobs they do their work by day to day events, where crisis is encountered every day, and leadership is essential to keep an operative system running. The basis for all management is leadership where correctional officers should have authority, talent, experience, ethics, and training. One that really stands out is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs for prison guards. Prison guards need to feel important as they are caring for and essentially keeping appalling criminals safety. They need to know what they are doing is important for society and also be emotionally stable to handle the high levels of stress they will encounter. All levels of the pyramid need to be met for prison guards to justly do their jobs while also staying mentally fit for their work. Prison guards Prison guards are the rule enforcers in correctional facilities, while maintaining and overseeing the safety and security of criminals sentenced to prison. This job has a high stress environment, with long irregular work shifts, with some of the highest injury rates in America (Heibutzki, 2015). These officers need extensive training in controlling and restraining so they can take on the role of enforcer that demands the ability to think on their feet, make quick decisions and deal effectively with unexpected situations. It is important that prison guards maintain
Everyday crimes are committed. Some of these offenses committed by perpetrators are more severe than others, and cause the individuals who carry out the crimes to be sentenced to time in the county or prison facilities. At the forefront of protecting these criminals from committing more crimes and jeopardizing the public’s safety are correctional officers. The main goal of corrections work is the safe and secure management and rehabilitation of justice-involved individuals, whether in locked facilities or within community supervision programs (Denhof, 1). Although, correctional officer’s sole job is to provide care, custody, and control for perpetrators, correctional officers have another job. That task is not to become subdued by the stress
Abraham Maslow was an American philosopher who was born in the early 1990 's in Brooklyn, New York. He was one of the leading theorists that promoted humanistic psychology during his era. Maslow sought to understand what motivates and inspires individuals. He theorized that individuals possess and hold a group of motivation and incentive systems not related to plunder or insensible desires. Maslow declared that people are motivated and provoked to attain certain needs. When one need is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfill the next one, and so on. The earliest version of Maslow 's hierarchy of needs includes five motivational needs, often viewed as hierarchical levels inside a pyramid. The five stage representation can be separated into basic needs and growth needs. The deficiency or basic needs are said to motivate and stimulate individuals when they are unmet and not fully attained. Also, the desire to fulfill and accomplish such wants and needs will become stronger the longer the duration they are denied. Once these needs have been relatively satisfied, an individual may be capable of reaching the highest level of the pyramid called self-actualization. Maslow though that self actualization is a state that exists when an individual is acting in harmony with his or her full capabilities. In Cormac McCarthy 's novel, The Road, we will examine the character 's physical journey towards self-actualization on Maslow
The threat of inmate violence against officers, actual violence committed by inmates, inmate demands and manipulation and problems with coworkers are all conditions that officers have reported as contributors to stress (Parker, 2006). The job of a correctional officer encompasses a wide array of activities. Officers are required to maintain order, security and control (Castle & Martin, 2006). Through the day their responsibilities may be revised as they are faced with an ever changing environment. As correctional staff feel conflict exists within their assigned duties and perceive a lack in control over their tasks, work stress will result (Tweksbury & Tiggins, 2006).
Prison guard positions have not been well-regarded by the masses. The low pay, even lower social status, possibility of attacks, and harsh prison environments support such a notion. Furthermore, workload issues, such as limited recovery time, multiple workloads and high peak loads have created stress among a majority of officers (Schaufeli & Peeters, 2011). Workload issues have been linked to dependence on certain staff and the inability to adequately fill positions (Schaufeli & Peeters, 2011). As a result, the hiring and overreliance on less qualified, undereducated, and non-experienced workers created
Correctional officers or prison guards: these classifications are used to identify those in authority in institutions throughout the world. Correctional institutions in the United States are formulated on fairness and productivity, and the administrators within the institutions are held at the highest responsibility to see fit the safety and wellness of inmates during their time of rehabilitation. However, with the vast exposure of insubordination overtime, prison guards are being targeted as the true criminals. In certain cases, correctional officers are abusing their authority and neglecting inmate’s constitutional rights. This misconduct has tainted the integrity of correctional officers throughout much of the United States. Evidently, I will further demonstrate the unlawful misconduct among those in positions as correctional officers, the reason for their misconduct, and their effects on inmates.
While working in law enforcement, whether it may be a police officer, a correctional prison guard, or a probation officer you always have to always act professionally at all times no matter who you are working with. If you do not show respect you will not get any respect. There are many people out there that want respect while they are in prison, but sometimes you have to earn it. Having ethical standards is a key importance too. When you are working especially in the prison you must obey the code of ethics because they do not want to hear about what is going on at your home. Keep calm in whatever situation you come across because you have no clue what type of situation you will come across. So having the best ethical and professional practice
To reduce the amount of stress and burnout amongst correctional officers it is imperative that officers are in good physical and mental condition to perform their tasks efficiently and effectively. Not only is it essential for their own safety and security, but also for coworkers, the facility, and inmates. To ensure the proper level of physical and mental condition for each officer is met, the facility could offer programs and implement policies to improve the likelihood of the approved level of fitness.
Consequently, in the journal the authors inform Americans about how prison guards moods affect the moral of the prison because the positive attitude helps everyone. The authors also states prisons zero to fifty have the best quality of life behind bars. Johnsen, et al elaborate on the relationships in prison, “Officers in small prisons also report more positive relationships with senior management..”. Having these positive relationships helps out the guards because they will not have to stress over their managers. Having the guards less stress can help them not lash out on the inmates. If the guards do not lash out then then they will have a better relationship with the inmates.
Minecraft games mimic the regular life in a real world which is clearly and accurately capsulated by Abraham Maslow in his “Hierarchy of Needs.” As in real life situations, one needs resources to satisfy one’s physiological needs like food and shelter. Unfortunately, acquiring the necessary resources to survive the day’s challenges is not easy. The same case is true in minecraft games.

Education class has taught me many important lessons such as the different learning styles, the importance of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and that no students are “lazy and dumb.” The three basic learning styles are kinesthetic, auditory, and visual. As an art teacher I plan on covering all learning styles by showing students examples of the project, having written instructions on the board, and reading the instructions out loud so that the children are able to fully understand what they are supposed to do. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is important to know because it explains the basic needs a person needs in their life. As an art teacher I will keep non messy snacks in the room so that students can take a snack break if they are hungry. I will also make sure that every student feels safe and like they belong in the class. Lastly I will make sure that no students feel as though they are thought of as being lazy or dumb in my class. By giving each student 3 forms of instructions, desks arranged to form groups, and the feeling of safety, any student should feel comfortable enough in the class to ask anyone in the room what they are supposed to be doing.
