MOTIVATION AT ROYAL MAIL
INTRODUCTION
Employee motivation is, or at least must be, one of the key issues for directors, managers and personnel managers. The leader must be able to find the sensitive strings of his subordinates, which can be motivated by influencing them to achieve high performance. The correct use of motivation encourages staff to make more efficient use of their knowledge, skills, and talents. In today's turbulent, often chaotic environment, commercial success depends on the employee's talent and effort. Despite the many existing theories and practices, some of the motivation of leaders today remains a mystical term. This is partly due to the fact that people are motivated by different things and techniques.

According to Maslow’s Needs theory, based on the fact that a person is justified as long as he still has not reached a certain level of satisfaction, has a better understanding of the fact that human motivation leads to a broad spectrum of their needs we could say that in order to motivate people, the manager has to give employees the opportunity to meet the needs in a way that together lead to the organization's objectives.
EMPLOYEE WORK VALUES
The salary is not only money, but everything the man values. It is enough to create a good working condition and employees will feel valued. Who had worked in the Soviet period, remembers one of the key employee's conducts - take it easy and do what says to do your direct responsibilities. In other words, not disturb anyone, than no one disturbs you. Times have changed and job descriptions for many corporate executives are worthless piece of paper now. Managers are usually strong enough and willing to have various stages of business - the foundation, development, maturity, change management - experience in any sense of human resource management knowledge gap. They do not have the financial, marketing and sales expertise. Now they need to manage people, but not control, and educate them, treat them in such a way that they would be satisfied with the work. In preparing training it is often use the example of the iceberg. What is above the water is called a worker's competence, the subjects that can
According to researcher Lindner (1998), motivated employees are needed in our rapidly changing workplaces to aid in the survival of organizations. Not only is it important to meet the needs of the consumer, it is equally important that to make sure that associates are taken care of and remain motivated. For this reason, Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly and Konopaske (2012) “states much of management’s time is spent addressing the motivation of their employees” (p. 125). According to the Encyclopedia of Small Business (2007), employee motivation is the level of energy, commitment, and creativity employees bring to their jobs; the inner force that drives individuals to accomplish personal and organizational goals (Lindner, 1988). Despite its obvious importance, employee motivation can be an elusive quest for managers due to the multiplicity of incentives that can influence employees to do their best work. The reality is that every employee has different ways to become motivated and the knowledge of how to motivate them is key to organizational success. It is imperative that employers get to know the personal needs and wants of their employees in order to establish tactics in which to motivate each of them. Once achieved, “managers are in a better position to encourage and reward employees to behave in effective ways” (Gibson et al, 2012, p.
Maslow identified that employees have the motivation to achieve certain needs. Once these needs have been achieved the employee will seek to fulfil the next set of needs.
Over the last several years, the issue of employee motivation inside the workplace has been increasingly brought to the forefront. The reason why is because, globalization has been having an effect on the ability of firms to compete (which is placing more pressure on them). To deal with these challenges, most organizations are relying on their employees. The results are that those employers who are able to use this resource will be able to make adjustments quickly. This is when the firm will be able to maintain their dominance in the marketplace.
Motivation is the key to the success to any organization. “Human relation thinkers see the terms motivation and behavior as closely related because human behavior occurs as a result of motivation” (Razik & Swanson, 2010, p. 108). Motivating people to work harder, give of themselves 100%, encouraging the employees to not only work harder, but smarter to develop ways of doing things better can be one of the hardest jobs of an organization (Razik & Swanson, 2010). In this essay I will describe several motivational theories Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs,
A manager’s objective must be to help construct an organization with employees that motivate and inspire each other. Employees’ motivation are important. Motivation affects employee’s performance, which affects the company’s overall success. It leads to greater work performance. Motivation is important because it creates the drive for employees to perform their responsibilities and achieve their organizational goals. “It is the psychological catalyst employees and owners require to reach the goal” (McKay, 2014). In order for managers to create a strategic motivational plan, managers need to have a better understanding of what motivates their employees.
Motivation in the workplace is one of the major concerns that managers face when trying to encourage their employees to work harder and do what is expected of them on a day-to-day basis. According to Organizational Behavior by John R. Schermerhorn, James G. Hunt and Richard N. Osborn the definition of motivation is "the individual forces that account for the direction, level, and persistence of a person's effort expended at work." They go on to say that "motivation is a key concern in firms across the globe." Through the years there have been several theories as to what motivates employees to do their best at work. In order to better understand these theories we will apply them to a fictitious organization that has the following
3 “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” clearly motivates employees by meeting their self-actualisation needs by offering career progression, introducing new elements to a role, developing supportive training and personal coaching.
In this report we will be discussing Motivation and how it has a large impact on the way employees perform within the workplace. We will be addressing the many benefits of having an adequate amount of motivation within the organization and the employees in it. How motivation within the workplace affects the company productivity will also be mentioned within this report. As an example of a company that has been succeeding taking motivation as a large factor leading to company success, we will be discussing how CIBC has been implementing the motivation strategy within their organization to bring forth success.
As indicated by Skinner (1953: 56), the concept of employee motivation has been clearly understood but rarely practiced. Skinner (1953: 56) continues to urge that in order to understand motivation, there lays great need in understanding human beings. In this regard, human behavior has been strongly correlated with the level of human motivation; meaning the higher the level of motivation, the better the behavior. With this in mind, it has been made clear that, proper employee motivation leads
Motivating workers can be one of the most challenging for management. Management should ask their workers what motivates them the most. If management has a hard time deciding the staff’s motivators, then he/she should ask them what would make them more eager and thrilled about doing their job. If the individual appears to be uncertain or undecided, then management should recommend different types of motivators. While they are making these recommendations, they should also listen and observe the employee’s reactions and responses. For the most part, employees want strong and well- defined goals, objectives, and expectations that are jointly understood and decided upon. They want a strong boss who is a great leader and he/she can lead and guide their actions. Also, they want respect and fair treatment. Staff that are motivated want to have opportunities to grow within the organization, to have power and say-so about their work, participate in decision-making, and to have a role or be a part of a triumphant team.
People are motivated by different rewards and therefore, a manager must know each employee’s reason to why they are working at the organization (Ivancevich, Konopaske and Matteson, 2014). Even though there is no best theory of motivation as a manager you have to work even harder to try and understand all your personnel’s motivation (Ivancevich, Konopaske and Matteson, 2014). One aspect of the motivational construct is for certain, the best way to influence individual performance is to have a reward system (Ivancevich, Konopaske and Matteson, 2014). This reward system can also attract outside talent to come and work at the
Maslow 's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology, proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper, “A Theory of Human Motivation”. His hypothesis stated that within every human being there exists a hierarchy of five needs. These needs are physiological: hunger, thirst and shelter; safety: security and protection from physical and emotional harm; social: affection, acceptance and friendship; esteem: self-respect, recognition, autonomy, and achievement; and self-actualization: the drive to grow and become something, achieving potential and self-fulfillment (Maslow, 1954). Maslow is still relevant to managers today. In order to motivate someone a manager must understand what level of hierarchy the person is on and focus on satisfying that level and those above it. The manager must also account for an individual’s intensity, direction and persistence since this also affects how a person attains their goals (Robbins & Judge, 2007).
This essay will discuss about what is motivation? what motivate people toward satisfy needs. The paper will includes three main artical theory by Abraham Maslow ( Maslow's Hierarchy of needs ), Clayton Alderfer ( Alderfer's ERC Theory ) and Psychologist David Mcclelland ( McClelland's Theory of needs ). The author will explain why motivation is important in an organization and how it will impact the organization. The three motivation theories will also be used together in order to enhance the staff’s motivation level to work and help the organization towards success. In the end will be the conclusion and opinions with my own expreriences.
Motivation is one of the most important tools in today’s workplace. Managers use motivation to inspire and influence people to work, both independently and team-wise, to produce the most efficient and effective results and productivity. They want to inspire employees to work toward organization’s goals. Moreover, in order to have an impact on employees, managers need to identify and understand what factors drive their employees. Some questions that manager should ask include: What kind of work environment will motivate people? What are the necessary rewards, both intrinsic and extrinsic, to encourage high performance and help maintain motivated performance? In management and organizational behavior, there are numerous theories of motivation, this paper will look specifically at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and its claim on what motivates people.
In today’s turbulent, often chaotic environment, commercial success depends on employees using their full talents. Yet in spite of the available theories and practices, managers often view motivation as something of a mystery. How are employees motivated? What are other companies doing to motivate employees and is it possible to motivate employees without money? These are questions that need to be answered.
