The profession that I have chosen to get a degree in at Kaplan University is a Bachelor’s of Science in Healthcare Administration. I was previously a nursing student going to school to get my RN but changed my mind after working in a clinical setting at my new area of employment. This clinical setting has opened my eyes and gave me the experience that I needed in order to help me realize what it was I wanted to do in the future and pointed me in the right direction for the degree that I have chosen to get. After graduation my goal is to become part of the administration team in the ophthalmology department where I work. The top three interests that I scored highest in were social, enterprising and conventional. I received a 12 in social, which show that I like working with others to help them learn and grow and like teaching, giving advice and helping to be a service to people. Which might explain why I received an award and certificate for recognition for being a preceptor and the main one on my unit? I received a 14 in enterprising which shows that I like work that has to do with starting up and carrying business projects. Which is accurate with me being the type of person that likes to take action rather than think about things? I love to persuade and lead people in the right direction and love making decisions. My last interest that I scored highest in was a 29 in conventional. This trait explains that I like work that follows set procedures and routines. It shows that it prefers I like working with information and details rather than ideas. Not only do I like following a strong leader but I love even more being that leader for those to look up to when needing assistance. (Bachelors in healthcare administration degree,
Using the GCIS skills assessment, I placed my top 5 skills as dependability, integrity, attention to detail, analyzing, and decision making. My top three personality types are Enterprising, Conventional, and Social and Investigative both have the same score. Enterprising I had the highest score of 39, enterprising is being competitive and liking to be in control and lead others. Also being responsible for getting your own work done and supervising others. I feel like enterprising is a great type for me to have, because to get the job I want and to climb in my field it will help to be competitive, also being able to lead others is great so when I have reached the pinnacle of the ladder I will be able to lead my fellow coworkers. Conventional was my second highest type at 33, conventional means I like to keep things in order, I do things careful and the right way, and use clear instructions and rules to do so. Conventional will also help me in my field
The career path I have chosen to pursue is being a health care administrator. There are many different career opportunities available in this field. Throughout this assignment I will be outlining the roles and responsibilities as an administrator or manager in healthcare, explaining the education requirements and certifications available, describing the needed skill sets and personality traits to be successful in such a role, my career goals and how Kaplan University career services can help me in achieving my goals and where I intend to see myself professionally in the next 5 years. This chosen career path will require a lot of hard work, diligence, effort and time to become successful in this field.
Some of the most prevalent disadvantages to an occupation in this field are the hours necessary. As a CPA with a large accounting firm I would expect a typical work week of 40 to 50 hours. But, during the tax season, January through April, it could be as many as 70 hours per week (S. Westfield, personal interview, August 1, 2008). Since I have already been employed within the accounting industry for some time now, my family and I are used to the long hours and fluctuation during busy times.
In my Strong Interest Inventory, my highest themes results were conventional, enterprising and artistic. For my MBTI results I was described to be introverted, rely on my intuition, feel rather than think, and perceive rather than judge. My results for the Five Factor Inventory were high neuroticism and agreeableness, low extraversion, very high openness, and moderate conscientiousness. Lastly, my Strength Finder results were: restorative, input, context, harmony and developer. These personality traits have helped me learn and succeed in different types of environments in high school. I believe my results are pretty accurate.
In order for me to complete this career assessment paper, I initially took an Interest Inventory survey. Upon completing this process, it revealed that my personality profile score was (I, C, A). These three letters represented my strengths and interests in determining which career field would best suit me.
My decision to pursue a degree in optometry started from an unlikely source within the field of healthcare. I originally aspired to become a pharmacist and had extensive experience as a pharmacy technician throughout high school and the start of college. As I progressed I became more unsure of the profession, and did not feel as though as if I was making a difference. Patient interaction was minimal and I felt that having a more personable connection would make for a better healthcare professional. I always knew I wanted to become a healthcare professional, I just was not sure pharmacy was the path for me.
The personality traits that are useful in this career are enjoying managing or leading people, being business oriented, being able to adapt easily, being dependable, having integrity, and paying attention to detail. My own personality does match up with these traits well. When I took the personality quiz on mynextmove.org, my highest score was in the social skills area. This didn’t surprise me at all because I do enjoy being around other people and listening to others. I think this skill is useful as a medical office manager because I will work with and around people all day every day. I must be able to adapt to the differences and qualities each person brings to the job. The one area that I feel I could use more work in is the leadership aspect. I have never felt like much of a leader, I took well to the guidance of others, but the older I get the more confident and controlled I feel. Also, with the knowledge I will gain at
I do like to work under a strong leader with set instructions. But, I always like to solve problems and search for answers. Lastly, throughout my life, I've have always been a helper and always found it personally rewarding to service anyone in need. These scores relate to your career goal because it confirms that my career path that I have chosen will be a good career path for me. The health care program management appeals to my social interest, because I am going to be providing a service to patience's and making sure that their information is in order. It appeals to my investigative interest because I will be solving any issues, technological or patient problems that could arise during the day. Lastly, it is attractive to my conventional interest because I will have a set schedule and a number of tasks to do in order to make sure the clinic is running
1. Describe the qualities, skills, talents, and experiences of a good health care practitioner. How do you exhibit them?
The My Plan (2016) assessments is a program that examines your career interest. This is determined by taking several assessments on your personality, interests, skills, and values. Based on my personality report, it indicated my personality type is ESTJ ( extroverted, sensor, thinker and judger). Some words used to describe me based on my personality report are social, patient, thoughtful and in control. On the My Plan (2016) my personal interest top two were investigative and social. My Plan (2016) concluded that I would work well with others and like communicating with others. Ultimately, I would agree that these results are correct and correlate well with the career I am going to pursue as a dental hygienist. Prior to taking the My Plan (2016) assessments I was undecided about wether I wanted to pursue my career as a dental hygienist or a registered nurse. Now I am confident about what I choose to do, because it is something that I have always been interested about and it is something I would actually enjoy doing.
These results are probably right since I like to help people. At the same time, these results reflect my personality, but it does not reflect my interest because I know what I want to do, I know what I want to be, and I know how I want to see myself in the future. For instance, I want to help animals which are my passion, consequently; I want to be a Veterinarian, and I see myself in the future having my own veterinarian clinic. I have really clear in my mind what my goal is and I am going to work towards my goal to achieve it.
Overall, I know that I have my mind set on pursuing the Care, Health and society major because there are a lot of different type of work I can do with many different focusses. I also took into consideration that jobs in the heath care system will never vanish because as long as there are humans living we will consistently need these occupations to take care of them. Plus, the medium range for this major is decent, I mean you cant become rich but its defiantly livable and money isn’t my only motive so I’m willing to settle for something less if its something I love doing. I would eventually love moving up the ranks and become a lead director within something related to projects for public outreach and be in charge and manage data base and personal within the company I will be working with.
With my degree, I plan on going into the helping profession. As a child, I have always had the passion to serve and help others. I want to take my skills acquired here at Appalachian and enlist Part-time in the United States Army Reserve as an Information Technology Specialist(25B). After serving I plan to do I.T audit or work in a public utility such as a hospital doing Information Technology Security and Information Technology Analyst.
My interest and work values did match up with what I liked for being a medical and health service manager. One of my interests that matched up with what I liked was finance and education and training. Finance is dealing with money like a banker. Education and training is teaching or training others. I like both of these because I always wanted to be something in this area. One work value that matched me was recognition. This is something that is like a leadership. I like this because I like to be in charge. The interests and work values did match up with what I
The top 3 skills I received after doing the Work Interest Assignment, were artistic, realistic, and conventional. I strongly agree with these results. I am very artistic and love taking art classes. However, under the description in FOCUS, it says that “they typically do not like structure or conformity.” I really like structure and planning things out which is why I think my third category was Conventional, “The Organizers”. The description says that “People in the conventional category often prefer orderly, systematic work.” This is much more like me. I enjoy things organized and planned out. My second highest one was Realistic. The description for this one said that “People in the realistic category often prefer to work with objects and things. They are likely to enjoy creating things with their
