Over the past few years, diversity has been a great part of my life, because I have been able to interact with people all around the world at my school, my community. In the pluralistic world we live in today, a diverse learning community is an essential part of my life experience. When we bring together groups of people from all kinds of race, ethnicity, culture, economic status, and all forms of diversity, we find the world greatly challenged. The word ‘challenge’ may hold a negative or intimidating connotation, but understanding the need to be challenged is crucial to any place that we go. In order to make strides in humanity, we need to exchange our differences and challenge our beliefs. The earlier we can bring diversity, the further
Diversity is about difference, and its value is richness and variety that different people bring to society.
Diversity helps cultures and traditions to loosen the grip on racism, discrimination and things like that.
As an owner of a growing automotive shop you are one day visited by a man named Jeff. Jeff runs his own lawn company and for his job he has 10 trucks, he was wondering if you would be willing to work on them for him. You show him around your shop and introduces him to your team. You have Chuck, Chuck has been with your shop for 22 years and he is a hard worker. You also have Sarah, Sarah has been with the shop for seven years and like chuck she’s a hard worker, also your last employee is Jake. Jake has been with the company for about two years he comes in after school and on the weekends. As you and Jeff sit down to discusses the opportune on how you can get the job. Jeff likes your place but he doesn’t like your workers because chuck is Muslim descent, Sarah is a female and Jake is too young. You now have a couple of options to get the contract. One, hire a third employee to
A corrupt creation full of covetous consumers. An overly patriotic parade home to racist radicals. An overflow of obesity. Even an influential ideology inferior to other nations. These phrases are frequently vocalized when defining America not exclusively by residents of other countries, but even more so by citizens of the United States. These phrases form a negative connotation associated with the American experience, yet for myself personally, this misconception could not be further from the truth. Through two optimistic eyes, I see an outlet for individualism, for citizens to follow and abide by personal beliefs. This glance captures the image of Americans expressing ideals. And further, Individuals who do not feel fear of being outcast for having diverse beliefs, but instead feel prompted, even encouraged to defend personal opinions. Remarkably, these images I see are not fictitious, but rather an opportunity for
“Diversity is about all of us.” Diversity is what joins us all together as a whole. It is what makes up the world. It can have a positive effect on a group.
Our lives are shaped by who we are, what we are, and where we come from. The different opportunities and life chances do matter in U.S. society in many ways. Research shows that someone's race, ethnicity, gender, social class, immigrant status, and sexual orientation, and other dimensions of identity, shape our life prospects from birth until death. Many aspects of yourself matter more than many of us want to acknowledge, because doing so means admitting that life isn’t actually an equal, and that the American dream is more easily fulfilled for some people than others. Ethnic minorities are often disadvantaged through being discriminated against at work, when looking for accommodation, health services and through various levels of law and order.
Throughout most of history, women have endured so much. They almost always had fewer legal rights and career opportunities. The main professions tied to women were wifehood and motherhood. According to "Women's History in America" (1995), “Women were long considered naturally weaker than men, squeamish, and unable to perform work requiring muscular or intellectual development.” The common stereotype was “a woman’s place is in the home.” Women went through the struggles of not being able to get an education, voice their opinions, not having the right to vote, and being viewed as property.
Cultural diversity, or multiculturalism, is based on the idea that cultural identities should not be discarded or ignored, but rather maintained and valued. The foundation of this belief is that every culture and race has made a substantial contribution to American history. However, many people remain opposed to the idea of multiculturalism, or cultural diversity awareness, while others often support it and yet have no clear idea of how it should be taught. The diversity of the United States is truly astounding, as many different ethnic and racial groups have contributed to the social,
To conclude diversity is a beautiful and important concept that strengthen our society by allowing us to have different personalities, opinions and experiences that makes us the people we are, providing us opportunities to grow and learn and creating bonds between
Here at XYZ Industries Inc. we believe in diversity and we want to celebrate the nature of our diversity. Because we are a company filled with great employees from different beliefs, race, color, and sexual orientation; starting this year the office will no longer host an annual Christmas Party. We will instead host a Winter Celebration. In an effort to be more accepting of individuals from all cultures and beliefs, we will no longer partake in activities affiliated solely with Christmas such as Secret Santa,
The idea that "diversity" is one of the country's great strengths is now so firmly rooted that virtually anyone can evoke it, praise it, and wallow in it without fear of contradiction. It has become one of the great unassailably American ideas, like democracy, patriotism, the family, or Martin Luther King.
At first glance I look about as non “diverse” as can be. A white middle class male brought up by two parents, with two siblings, and a dog. Much like many other kids my age I enjoy playing video games, watching movies/tv shows, participating in sports, and listening to music.
When America was founded, it was established on freedom and equality for all people. At first it was just religious freedom, but eventually freedom of speech, press, petition, and more. In time, America began to be known as a “melting pot” of cultures as more and more people came because they wanted this freedom; the more people who came though, the more problems America had. There were too many cultural discrepancies between people, and ultimately America, the country based on freedom and equality, faced challenges concerning diversity.
The effects of diversity, on an organization and upon individuals within it, in business management have been widely studied and can be useful in understanding diversity in public administration. For example, diversity in both areas leads to a greater range of perspectives being considered, promoting higher quality idea towards efficiency and productivity (pg.115, Pynes) (pg.28, Choi). While they are similar, public organizations, such as the federal government, have a unique set of variables that require completely different approaches. The distinction of operating with much higher levels of influences and scrutiny of political actors requires a much more complex view of diversity in terms of understanding the
Organizations are made up of people who are tasked to work together towards a wide range of goals and a good manager organizes and leads them to succeed while effectively managing the conflicts using cultural awareness. Mangers in organizations that embrace the conflict constructively can enhance innovation using different viewpoints, increase creativity, better competition and reduce the chance of group think. When I took the Personal Diversity Maturity Index one of the questions was “What is the most important reason to respond to diversity effectively?” The answer with the highest score was “It will make my company more competitive” which was the answer I chose because of what I learned during the research for this class. The success in making diversity an asset for an organization is understanding and learning from our differences. Studies have shown that conflict handling styles influence innovation, product performance and economic outcome (Gunkel, Schlaegel, & Taras, 2015, p. 568). Everyone looks at the world and interprets it through their own life experiences so the members of an organization have to strive to understand other perspectives and support diversity an inclusion of all team members’ ideas.
