Within this report I will be explaining the function of research within health and social care and I will also be comparing the two different research methodologies that are used within health and social care. Then I will be discussing the different ethical issues that can arise when researching in health and social care and in health and social care settings.
Research is the process of collecting and analysing information to be able to provide knowledge to then be able to highlight gaps and identify the needs in society. Also needed to be able to extend knowledge on subjects to then be able to improve practice and then be able to monitor practice. The different purposes of research are to be able to establish the different patterns in the population so they are able to effectively plan for the services provisions. Also research is used to be able to see and review the different patterns of different diseases. Research is also used for quality assurance; this is gathering feedback from service users about the services that they have used and then being able to be used to improve services.

There are two different kinds of research that would be used within health and social care, social research method and lab based research. Social research method would be used to investigate and research into people’s emotions, attitudes, and perceptions. This method of research is not scientific and does not lend itself to scientific research at all. Whereas the type of research called lab based research is a scientific method, this research method would be used to research into diseases, illnesses and disorders in a scientific way. Disability- many people suffer from discrimination when they have a disability. This is because they are different from others and can not physically do the things others can. According to the course syllabus we were introduced to the techniques of psychological research. This course was able to provide an understanding of how research is done, and what methods we can use to do so. By having a clear understanding of research and techniques used, it allows us to communicate effectively in regards to ideas behind the research process. It is important to support an individual in promoting their mental well-being and mental health. When offering support it is important to be patient, understanding and accepting. Talking to the individual can provide an insight into what they are going through and offering advice based on their current state of mind. Researching different mental health issues and offering resources to the individual can help them to develop new strategies to cope.
This is for individuals who are lacking the mental capacity and need somebody else to help them manage their legal, financial and health problems. The mental capacity act therefore made it legal so that those who are unable to make their own decisions have the ability to choose somebody who they feel they can trust to help manage their finances, properties and to help make their health and welfare decision. This is done through the power of attorney. This act links to individuals who suffer with dementia as within the late stages of dementia they will need to give someone the power of attorney due to the fact that they will not be able to manage their legal financial and health problems.
Over the year both positive and negative influences have influenced my learning. The skill I have developed for learning is my aspiration is to become a midwife, this influences my learning in the way that it gives me the hunger to learn new things and improve my knowledge and grades. By improving my knowledge I will be able to go onto the next stage of my development. I believe that if I did not have such a desire to be a midwife, it would affect my learning by creating a mental blockage which would stop my ability to take things in and learn as I would become lazy and not interested from the lack of direction in my life. As soon as I realised what I wanted to do as a career, it really highlighted my priorities and I found that I have
