What is a dietician?
The role of a dietician consists of them using their understanding of nutrition and the science of the body to provide individuals with guidance on how to lead a healthy lifestyle. By advising their patients, they also prevent them from getting fatal diseases or illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes.
What do they do?
Dieticians promote the well-being of others to insure that they have fit health. They apply their knowledge of nutrition in their everyday work as they work with patients that have been recommended by doctors. They also need to concentrate as they need to do tests such as BMI to give you some indication of your current state. People skills are important as you need to able to communicate with patients.
How does a dietician use scientific skills? (Scientific knowledge used in the investigation (links with last unit)
A dietician also uses scientific skills such as their understanding of the body to give individuals the best guidance they can provide. Their scientific skills and knowledge of the body help them give patients the right medical advice. For example from their understanding of the balanced diet they could and the patients BMI helps them suggests ways in which the person could improve their diet. As you’ll be working narrowly with patients one-to-one, you must show them that you’re reliable and have a professional assertiveness towards them.
Purpose of the NHS
The NHS (National Healthcare Service) was established in 1948 by the labour government, it’s a free health service with the goal of bettering the health of individuals who live in the UK. This programme is financed by the taxes that the state pays, so everyone is entitled to receive healthcare from the NHS. They aim to deliver great quality healthcare for everyone as they want to ensure the security of their wellbeing.

The Dietary Analysis helped me become more aware of me current health. Because I am on the go most of the time, I find it very easy to pick up something fast to eat rather than making a full healthy meal. It was until things assignment that i noticed I eat a lot of more calories than I thought I did. I learned that I eat a lot of protein. Sometimes I eat protein bars because I think they are healthy. Before taking this class I never really payed attention to food labels. I am now a lot more alter while checking food labels. Before this class I would often just get frozen vegetables and then add them to my meals. I learned that refined foods lose all the nutrients. While doing this study, I noticed that I eat a lot more fast food than I should. The more red meat i eat the higher the risk for chronic diseases. The delicious double burger, chocolate cake, vallina shake, greasy fries are all foods that will increase the risk for chronic disease. I learned that I can inmpove my health by counting my calories. I have made changed in my eating habits to try to watch my calorie intakes.Due to this study I am now able to know what to look for in food labels. I now know that too much food containing more than 10% sodium or cholesterol are probably not the best option to chosse from.
My short-term goals are to enhance my knowledge of medical nutrition therapy, to gain experiences in all aspects of the dietetic field especially in clinical nutrition setting, and to become an RD. My long-term career goals are to become Certified Diabetes Educator, to engage and serve in community nutrition, and to promote wellness and preventive health care for socio-economically and culturally fragile populations. The U.S. population has become increasingly diverse in ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. Therefore, I believe that providing patient-centered education with respect on the differences of cultural, religious, and dietary practices are the keys to becoming a successful educator in nutrition counseling and education.

Being able to break information down to where the patient or patients can understand is a wonderful skill to posses because I will be dealing with so many cultures, ethnicity, and age groups. A lot of people do not understand when doctors and even medical assistants use certain terms, so when they are spoken to where they can understand, it makes them feel better just knowing what is going on instead of feeling more confused than what they was when they came in. And also it lets them know that you care enough to take the time and effort to make sure they understand.

As a future dietitian, I can see in myself that I am passionate to work with he Hispanic community, utilizing my Spanish speaking skills and working with low socioeconomic populations. Growing up as low socioeconomic Hispanic community, I feel that I can relate to my community more than the average health professional. I love working with children and getting to know them and their family. As a health professional that will be working with trying to change dietary lifestyles, I think that having that cultural competency with this particular community will always be useful. My Spanish skills can help me gain the confidence of some of my patients or clients and find better ways to assess their needs.

You need to know how to make small talk, calm people down and explain to them what is happening. They need to be accepting and appreciative of diverse people and be able to listen to people’s problems and concerns. They also need to be quite organised, they need to safely manage all the client’s information and keep records of everything. Another key quality of being a dietitian is being a problem solver. Their job is to help others solve their problems and to do that they need to be quick thinkers and know many problem solving techniques. Finally, to be a dietitian you need to be able to clearly communicate your thoughts in writing. They must also need to clearly explain medical terms to people who may not understand as easily.
