I do not believe that there is only one correct philosophy to base classroom learning around, but I do think there are quite a few that can be integrated together to create the most suitable learning environment and best coursework progression scheme. However, I would argue that student-centered philosophies are best for maximizing the amount of student needs met. Schools for increasing potential in students to be successful outside of the classroom in intellect, social behavior, and critical thinking. I believe in having students follow the key concepts, but allowing them to create in different ways to express them. Since I would like to become an English teacher one day, I believe it is very important for students to develop a unique writing style and successful critical thinking skills. Students should be exposed to multiple types of material and literature and be allowed to pursue whichever type peaks their interest most, as well as be able to comprehend the work and allow it to have an effect on their writing style. In order to create a well-rounded student, students with different stylistic approaches and comprehension abilities should be paired together to make stimulating conversation and peer learning possible. Through literature, many topics can lead to discussion of social reconstruct. If a student, or any individual, cannot critique the world around them, they cannot make improvements to the world or to themselves. Social reconstruction influences critical thinking and problem solving; this is important to express to the students to partner with their progressive and expressive learning to ensure student success. The things of everlasting importance should be taught to people everywhere. I believe that there should be an authority figure to guide the students. When the word student comes to mind, I picture a person sitting down astute and eager to learn. Nevertheless, when I think about myself as a student over the years, this picture is not always painted perfectly. The educational concept of a student simply means a person who is willing and ready to learn something new. If the willingness to participate in learning new ideas is missing, so is the student. Students must approach learning with the right attitude. The student should have a genuine desire to learn and to work hard at achieving new knowledge.
I believe that teaching is one of the most important professions in the world today. From the very beginning, until present time, teaching has been around. The book of Genesis speaks of God walking and talking with Adam in The Garden of Eden, God was teaching Adam. I will be proud to, one day, be a part of this great calling.
The project based learning pedagogy appeals to me the most. I am typically a hands on learner who likes to research and gather information. I think this is an excellent learning strategy because it allows students to get involved in their learning process rather than just receiving information. For example, at my internship site, I am observing a 9th-grade earth science class, and it is apparent that the students are bored, which is why there are so many behavioral problems in the classroom. I believe that education extends far beyond the classroom walls, and involves many more people than students and teachers. People should be learning wherever they go, and should continue learning long after they’ve graduated from high school or college. Education isn’t something that can be quantified with tests or report cards, but is instead something that people carry with them. It’s a survival pack for life, and some people are better equipped in certain areas than in others. People with a solid education are prepared for nearly anything, as they will be able to provide for their own physical, emotional, and aesthetic needs.
Every teacher has a different method of teaching. The teachers that I have had in my school career have been no exception. In this way, each teacher has set an example for me, as a future teacher, to follow or not to follow as I see fit. With the examples from my teachers and in continuing my education, I am developing my own method of teaching. I plan to use a combination of teaching methods in my own classroom. My method will be an eclectic approach because I will be using components of more than one philosophy. I will be using essentialism, behaviorism, progressivism, and existentialism.
In terms of philosophy, I feel I benefit most from the pragmatic approach to teaching. This approach states that teachers feel the classroom is a community of learners, not just a teacher standing in front of a group of students. I believe this is true because it is my opinion that if the teacher is learning and exploring along with the students, the students are more likely to be involved and interested in what is being taught. I also believe the strategies of teaching by problem solving and encouraging democratic procedures are the most profitable in today’s society. My beliefs in student involved activities, emphasis of curriculum, and democratic classroom management are all part of the pragmatic approach.
