According to the die rolling activity, I am a black woman who earns a high income and resides in a rural environment. In regards to family medical history, I do not have any family members with diabetes. Considering the personal aspect of the determinant of health, I would, more than likely, be engaged in healthy living. Given the fact that I earn a high income, the probabilities are that I have a high education. With a high education, I will be able to make healthy life choices which will allow me to live a relatively happy and long life. In regards to the social aspect, I am more inclined to live in an area where poverty is low and I would an easy access to healthy food. Poverty level and crime can be correlated. Health determinants are the factors that can have a positive or negative impact on a person’s health. Many things can affect how healthy we are, from a complex interplay between macro to molecular influence to influences from society (for example, the prevalence of drug and alcohol use), to individual factors such as genetic make-up. Education, employment, income, lifestyle, psychosocial and physiological factors can also influence a person’s health and wellbeing. Health can also be significantly affected, and modified to some extent, by the quality and timeliness of the health care services we receive, including preventative health care such as education, screening and immunization.
The barriers that stand in the way of maintaining a good health vary from one country to another. Moreover, within the same country these barriers vary depending on the socio-economic status of the individual. For individuals living in Canada, the main barrier to maintaining a good health is poverty. Those mostly affect by poverty are the youth, homeless, new immigrant and the Aboriginal communities. Even though poverty does not cause diseases directly, it is a significant issue because people living in poverty are lacking the resources to mitigate diseases. Poverty affects the ability to maintain a good health indirectly through its effect on an individual’s access to adequate healthcare, appropriate housing and nutritious food.

Mr. Nate Bock first appeared in the classroom I thought he was just going to talk to us about being healthy. I had thought this because this week is titled “Staying Healthy.” I figure it would be a pretty basic class where he’d tell us how to eat healthier and how to exercise more and the usually “Staying Healthy” things. But, that was not the case. He spoke on alcohol and how the amount of alcohol consumed by college students is quite exaggerated. This I found quite shocking.
Many people in the United State do not have an understanding on what it means to be healthy or unhealthy. Some believe that there are healthy because they are not sick. After losing my grandfather to lung cancer, I developed a passion in educating and helping people improve their lifestyles. Although, my grandfather quit smoking 10 years prior to his death, I wish preventions and intervention were enforced earlier on. My grandfather grew up in the era when smoking was cool. No one was concerned about the harmful effects of smoking. Nonetheless, there is still hope to help others. I believe that everyone has the potential to improve
Wealth is the strongest determinant of health in The United States of America as well as in other thriving nations, however the relationship between wealth and health is on the rise in the United States. A high socioeconomic, which is associated with wealth, is linked to a number of benefits that are profoundly connected with health outcomes. These benefits include higher-level education, employment, environment, food, and health care. Although many of the factors contribute to health status differences, access to health insurance and health care services could help to reduce disparities. While lower family income generally means a lower probability of having employer-based insurance, African Americans were less likely to have job-based insurance at all income levels compared to their white counterparts for many years (UCLA, 2000), prior to Obama care. Even African Americans who receive similar education to Whites, are more likely to live in poverty compared to a their white counterparts Black patients compared to any other lower socioeconomic position are least likely to receive medical services.
Healthy People is a project that follows a ten-year target, which sets goals and objectives to improve the overall health of Americans. The purpose and goals of Healthy People is to improve quantity and quality of life, to eliminate health disparities and achieve health equity, to protect health throughout one’s life, and last, to make environments healthier for individuals and families. (CITE) There are over forty topics that Healthy People covers; one of which is physical activity. The Physical Activity initiative for Healthy People 2020 is to improve the health, fitness, and overall life quality of individuals (CITE). The vision is to increase the amount of physical activities in every life stage, to improve the environment of the underrepresented
Prior to reading the article “Creating a Culture of Healthy Living”, I had expected to learn about the different aspects of how communities maintained healthy living environments, and how cultures come together within a community. Instead the article enlightened me about the fact that so many Americans die from heart diseases and strokes. However, what shocked me the most was the fact that so many people still continue to engage in life threatening activities such as smoking, which causes 443,000 U.S. citizens to die prematurely each year.
Definitions about what a healthy person is and what illness is have changed significantly over time. The World Health Organisation states that ‘’Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’’. Whilst this definition has not changed since 1946, the understandings of what constitutes an illness has greatly. For example, at the time of this definitions publication, homosexuality was seen as deviant or an illness to be cured, whereas in modern western society it is no longer considered as such. Similarly, menstruating women are often diagnosed with PMS, which is now medically considered an illness but was overlooked in the past. In modern western societies, health and illness is often understood using a primarily biological approach, called the biomedical model, which holds a strong focus on finding cures for various diseases and allowing people to survive for longer. However, over the last two centuries sociologists have challenged the model, often arguing that a biological approach cannot be entirely sufficient for understanding health and illness. This essay will explore the evolution biological approach and social theoretical critiques including the existence of health inequalities and the over reliance on surgical and other invasive procedures in order to determine whether it is solely sufficient in understanding health and illness. It will discuss how the social construction of health and illness
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is indeed a meaningful duty we owe ourselves. ‘If you do not have good health, you do not have wealth’. Healthy lifestyle means upholding a balanced and nutritious diet as well as involves in fitness activities. A healthy diet alone however isn’t sufficient to produce a healthy body as physical activity helps to keep one in shape and free of sickness and disease.
Staying healthy is a point of importance for many. In order to stay healthy, preventative measures such as screenings and check-ups are scheduled. While these preventative measures can be taken, the underlying cause for symptoms brought to light by medical professionals may be unknown. Rather than causes being housed in the body, they can be sourced in the environment. The model example of this medical phenomenon is mold. Growing in homes exposed to water, mold can stay hidden behind walls, flooring, or ceilings silently affecting the inhabitants. Mold toxicity can be brought on by numerous sources causing life-threatening health implications if not properly treated.
The concept of living a healthy lifestyle not only can be referred to as living life free of illnesses and disease but it can also be interpreted as maintaining a stable well-being living life happy, full of positivity, and stress-free
“Worldwide over 1 million people die due to lung cancer each year. It is estimated that cigarette smoking explains almost 90% of lung cancer risk in men and 70 to 80% in women”. (Walser, et al., 2008).An unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major contributors to almost every disease, illness and health issue that we are facing in this country and the whole world today as well. It becomes worse in the Malaysian society. There are several unhealthy lifestyles among
