There are several reasons why Kentucky Fried Chicken is successful in China. The first reason for KFC’s success in China is their growth strategy. KFC in China decided it’s goal was for rapid expansion and to develop in smaller cities rather than large ones. This business decision was done to reduce costs. KFC would be able to be the first in a new area and have a better choice of locations. This also meant free publicity from the grand opening and would be receptive to mall owners. Kentucky Fried Chicken was the first Western fast food chain to arrive in China and a KFC location is opening at a rate of about one a day. They are successful in this strategy, because they are thinking outside the box. Most fast food chains are opening in large cities and competition is everywhere. Opening in smaller areas reduces costs, gives customers a feel of something new and exciting and has less competition.
Another reason for KFC’s success in China is understanding the changing Chinese culture and the different regional tastes. Chinese middle class are finding it hard to find time to prepare family meals. The Chinese lifestyle is changing and western fast food is considered a healthier option to Chinese fast food. The Chinese people want a change and are tired of Chinese food. Not only did KFC develop a specific menu to address the different regional tastes but altered the facial features of the iconic Colonel Sanders to look more Asian so the Chinese people could relate
Hi, Rina! Although I could not find specific quotes from the assigned article, I found some insight in outsides article written by NPR and The Atlantic. In "Where Did That Fried Chicken Stereotype Come From?", Demby interviewed Claire Schmidt a professor at the University of Missouri who studies race. Schmidt explained that "chicken had long been a part of the Southern diets, but they had particular utility for slaves... they were cheap, easy to feed and a good source of meat" (Demby). As for watermelon, an Atlantic article titled "How Watermelons Became a Racist Trope" explained that "free black people grew, ate, and sold watermelons, and in doing so made the fruit a symbol of their freedom" (Black). However, as southern whites started to
The McDonald’s in Beijing created these trends because they used the same menu as the American counterpart. This increased business and attracted customers because they felt more modern eating the so-called “American cuisine.” The McDonald’s in Beijing is most definitely considered an example of an American-inspired, transnational culture because the Chinese are intrigued with the western influence and this does change their culture because they are becoming more modern and opening up to outside influences. With a positive view from China, McDonald’s decided to expand even more.
Whole chickens are very successful in Canadian culture and that is why, with the surplus of chickens, Canada should export whole chickens to Australia. The first reason is for why Canada should export chickens is because Australians love meat with a passion. For example, in 2014, an Australian census was conducted based on the annual consumption of meat. Australians, per person, on average consumed 90.21 kg worth of meat. In comparison, the U.S. consumed 90.04 kg of meat per person, See graph “An appetite for meat.”
Panda Restaurant Group is a fast food restaurant chain who serve American Chinese cuisine. Panda Restaurant is the largest American Chinese segment restaurant chain in the United States. The first KFC was opened in Tiananmen Square, China 1987; it struggled as western food was unknown to the east. This was still a very conservative nation, not prepared for the “Fast Food” takeover. The restaurant did pretty well, but grew slowly. The Harvard business review, stated that “in 1992 the Chinese government granted foreign companies greater access to markets, KFC China’s managers gradually developed the blueprint that would transform the chain.” (Yums' China, 2017) Although they have done well for themselves they struggled, as growth was steady but slow and their customer base was shrinking. “In November 2016 Yum China Holdings, Inc. became a licensee of Yum brands in Mainland China; they have exclusive rights to KFC.” (Yums' China, 2017) Yum controls approximately 7,300 restaurants and more than 400,000 employees in more than 1, 100 cities. YUMS generated over $8bln in sales in 2015.
The saturation of the US QSR industry has caused firms to look outside of US borders for growth opportunities. Europe has been a very attractive market for global expansion due to its large affluent population and that menu options do not have to be completely customized to the region. China and India are also attractive environments but require more modified product offerings to meet local demands. KFC has had to offer options such as burgers, ribs, or fish to meet local cultural demands in their overseas expansion.
Despite Yum! brands huge success in china, there have been a lot of risks and threats in entering the local market. In respect to that its critical to mention the oppositionof the local population in perceiving fast food industry and especially western culture entering their own market.
When watching the movie, “Eat Drink Man Woman”, I was able to learn a lot about the Chinese culture and the food that they eat. Even though all the food that was prepared in the film was high end cuisine, I was still able to get a glimpse of what it had to offer. When a lot of Americans think of Chinese food, they tend to think strictly about American Chinese food, and that is not the case. Many meals were prepared in the film that ranged from elegant soups, chicken, duck, and fish, to fancy dumplings, and desserts. The film was able to show me a lot of what the food they eat looks like, even if it was five star meals, and had a great storyline to back it up.
The imbalance between original Chinese cuisine and adapted Chinese American cuisine is also reflected in Chinese immigrant families with American born children, where “parents are convinced that their own ways are the best recipe for success and constantly worry that their children are becoming too Americanized too soon” (Zhou 188). People describe American Born Chinese as bananas because they share similar characteristics, yellow on the outside but white on the inside. Similarly, Panda Express is also a banana, a restaurant providing Chinese food with American adaptations in American society. Many people accused that orange chicken is not authentic Chinese food; however, what is authentic Chinese food? Food is always the best representative of a culture; but for China, there is no absolute definition of
As the globalization progresses, there are increasing number of people expanding immigrate to other countries. At this point, the ethnic food also come with them into other countries. For example, the American fast-food chains, such as McDonald 's and KFC, substantially adjust their menus, including by providing special items, into the non-US markets. Stern mentioned that the restaurant should depend on scrambling to come up with new dishes to please local tastes. (Stern). The chains have removed and added special menu items to ethnic cuisines to adapt local tastes. In the modern American society, ethnic dining is a significant part in American life, because around half of all meals consumed in America are coming from other countries. According to Lu and Fine, more than 30,000 Chinese restaurants operate in the United States even though Chinese Americans constitute a small percentage of the overall population (Lu and Fine). These restaurants were influenced on external market facts, which to be Americanization, they had to transform ingredient and techniques of traditional recipes to meet American tastes (Lu and Fine). Despite those changes made food to be popular in American market, the question about that lack of authenticity of ethnic foods also was coming. And it was results in ethnic food to become Americanization ethnic foods. As a result, the original ethnic food lacks their authenticity, and it could be reflected
“Enjoyment and appreciation of food is universal and has provided so many bridges between disparate cultures. Chinese food was adapted for Western palates and became the main attraction for people to venture into Chinatown and have the chance to meet and learn about Chinese people.
Whether you are on a street corner in New York City or are sitting in rural Iowa there is likely a Chinese restaurant that you can get the same food at. Kung po chicken, almond chicken, or the ever so popular general tso it is virtually available all over the country. A huge reason why they are all over the country and ever so popular is because of the during the late 1800’s the United States Government created more visas for Chinese to come over if they were restaurateurs. This had allowed for thousands of people to come to the country and open up restaurants. The only issue was many Americans didn’t have the palate for traditional Chinese food. They had to then create meals like chop suey and general tso to please the American palate and to stay in business. (Gastropod) These foods has turned into what is the populations favorites comfort foods. These foods had become a favorite and played a huge roll in families. Getting Chinese food for every other Sunday dinner or before their thanksgiving dinner. An even a larger group is the impact they have had on the Jewish population, allowing them to go to dinners on Christian holidays and really becoming a statement of their religion. (The Search for General Tso) This twist of Chinese food has really has turned it into an American food, creating a delicious comfort food that all Americans love along
The procedure begins with an online screening test to ensure that the candidate is fit for the business, and the actual work preview allows the candidate to personally experience the job and then decides to join KFC.

Providing customers with the best of both worlds: west meets east. In addition to its radical strategic approach of localization with regard to its food, they extended that viewpoint when selecting their management team. By hiring Chinese executives, Yum! Brands is able to build relationships with the local suppliers more easily and quickly. It definitely helps with their competitive advantage that chicken is a staple meat in China. Given these factors, it is clear that KFC has a competitive advantage in this market.
