Traits And A Golden Retriever

Decent Essays

This essay is about how traits are passed and how traits are inherited. Traits are features and characteristics that we can see. Everyone has traits and you get them by inheriting them. Also included in this essay is the breeding of a German Shepard and a Golden Retriever. Everyone has traits, but how do we get them? Your genotypes determine your phenotype (or trait). To determine your genotype, you use the alleles given from each parent. If an allele is dominant then it is expressed by a capital letter, and if it is a recessive allele then the letter is lowercase. Your genotype can be expressed in different ways, Homozygous Dominant (EE), Heterozygous (Ee), and Homozygous Dominant (ee). In order for you to know the probability of the offspring getting a certain trait is through Punnett Squares and Pedigrees. In a Punnett square you put one genotype on the top of the square and put the other genotype on the left side of the square. You use those and cross the alleles and get the genotypes for the offspring. You can then use the genotypes to determine the probability of the offspring getting a dominant or …show more content…

I chose to breed a Homozygous Dominant German Shepherd and a Heterozygous Golden Retriever. I tracked a trait of Fur Color and when I used a Punnett Square I found out that the offspring will have dominant black/brown fur. The ratio for the genotype is 2:2:0 (50% Homozygous Dominant, 50% Heterozygous, and 0% Homozygous Recessive). The ratio for the phenotype is 2:2 (50% Black Fur, 50% Brown Fur). I chose to breed these two dogs because you don't see many people with a German Shepard and a Golden Retriever mix, and you can make money off of them since they are rare. Too help me with this essay and project I read in a powerpoint that ¨Half of the chromosomes from Mom & Half from Dad (23 + 23= 46)¨. That helps me understand how the alleles are transferred and how traits are
