In today’s working environment successful leaders must break out of their shells to be successful. Since studying organizational development I have become more cognizant of this fact. Through the study of organizational development, I have seen skills that are strengths for me, and a few I can improve. The following sections will identify the areas of strength I have been successful with and the areas that I realize can be improved.
My OD Competency Areas of Strength There are two areas of strength I have identified. The first strength is self-awareness/self-management from the Interpersonal Skills and Personal Characteristics category. The second strength is public speaking from the General Personal Skills category. In the past, I would not have considered these as strengths, but over time they have become an integral asset as I have progressed in my personal life and career. I have been able to utilize them to my advantage in order to receive effective feedback such as constructive criticism or when I have a disagreement with others. The key to effective self-awareness/self-management is knowing yourself and how to handle your emotions as they happen. The older I have become I have been able to analyze situations and people and respond accordingly. By staying aware of my emotions, I will be able to maintain my emotions in check and remain flexible in how I direct my behavior when handling situations and people. A perfect example of this concept was a few
My greatest personal strength is that I am comfortable speaking to large groups. This will enable me to clearly give information and guide the ensemble effectively in any situation.
In this journal, I will discuss my strength skills and skill that I would need to make growth in. Then I will discuss strategies I can use to enhance my group leadership skills that I need growth in.
In addition to my personal challenges my personal strengths interfer. A personal strength I have is talking , I love sharing my opinion. Another personal strength I have is giving good advice because I love helping people solve their problem or help make their lives easier. Lastly another personal strength I have is just listening because I am a good person to vent to because I don’t judge. Therefore I always spread positivity and lean a hand.
My second key strength is showing gratitude to others. If someone does something for me or helps me develop a new skill. I show gratitude to them by thanking them, and I tell them that really appreciate their help. I am there for that person when they need my help.
Strength is that part of your intellect or nervous system that is more effective and productive than other parts. Throughout your experience of life, your actions or reactions drive different thoughts, behavior and emotion in your brain. The requests that are processed more efficiently and rapidly are known as your strengths. Nowadays, strengths-based approaches to work and life are gaining a lot of popularity and often they are used to improve leadership and create more productive and efficient work teams.
These strengths include organization, participation, and creation of checklists. I feel I stay very organized in this class, as I have all of my documents organized inside my binder ready for a notebook check. In regards to participation, I try my best to raise my hand nearly every class. I stay active and focused so that I can obtain all of the information. I also ask questions frequently which helps me to avoid mistakes or any confusion. My final strength, the fact that I create checklists, has benefitted me immensely. Checklists help to make sure all requirements are met for any project or essay, which is how I received a 91 on my Pilgrim Presentation and an 85 on my Canterbury Tales Short Essay. Checklists have helped me to score higher on assignments with multiple requirements, but not all assignments were as simple as creating a
Areas of Strength After observing myself as a knower, I found that my strengths lie in the following three forms of inquiry: aesthetic (meaning), ethical (values), and sociopolitical (context) (Hatrick Doane & Varcoe, 2014b). This is because I feel that my knowledge within this area can be applied within multiple viewpoints.
Strong will and confidence, areas that I also listed as strengths, can easily slip to weaknesses if I do not remember to pause and listen. One of my greatest weaknesses is listening to others and truly hearing what they are communicating. My leadership will improve in this area by practicing listening techniques. Another area that I need to keep in balance is my ability to quickly and confidently problem solve coupled with my strong will because these strengths lead me to make others feel excluded or that I am preventing their growth. I can improve in this area by learning to pause, look around, ask questions of others, and then formalize the plan of action.
I think I need to improve on myself awareness and need to learn to understand my emotions and realize the limitations for myself instead of pushing myself over thresholds. A good way to improve this to be more mindful about my emotions and any physical cues I have. I think I also need to understand my weaknesses and my strengths. I think analysing someone’s emotions throughout the day could be an effective strategy for this but I think keeping a diary and going back and reading over emotions I had experienced and analysing them and
Another strength is being deadline driven. Being able to give someone a deadline, then meeting or exceeding that deadline is very important to me. Once a project is approved, I create a schedule and share it with all parties involved, so everyone knows the expectations. The last strength I demonstrate as a leader is the ability to make decisions. During projects, obstacles arise, and decisions need to be made in
I feel that areas of strength are in areas of family engagement. I have seen that placing children into foster case seems to be the norm in the larger counter that I work in and whenever I hear a caseworker talking about wanting to being a child into care, I always ask to speak with the family first to see if we can identify alternative placement options before they explore foster case. I also feel that another area of strength that I have identified within myself is leadership characteristics. I enjoy helping other caseworker learn to critique themselves and help them to identify steps that are needed to resolve their casework practices. I have also come out of my “shell” and find it easy to speak in groups of people. Coming from a county
The second strategy towards improving Self-Awareness is strategy number 6, Watch Yourself Like a Hawk (Bradberry, 2009). By working on this skill I can develop a more objective understand of my own behaviors to process all the information before I act. I need to take a step back analyze the situation, control my emotions to have a clear view of how to handle what is coming with a clear and collective head. I need to be proactive instead of
In becoming an effective manager for my future career self-awareness wound enhance my ability to identify myself constantly in order to manage myself and order individual in the organisation, it we help me identify area of success and areas of growth in knowing my strength and weakness that seeks for improvement as a manager it will help me to be more effective in performing my job as a manager, self-analysis will aid me as a manage in decision process in knowing where am heading to and why in order to achieve my goals; self-awareness gives me effective possibilities for understanding my own emotional dynamics.
