Distinguish between proto-oncogene and oncogene. Describe two mechanisms by which genetic change causes cancer

Expert Solution
Step 1

Oncogene refers to the cancer-causing gene and is expressed in higher concentration in tumor cells upon mutation. These genes are generally inactive but upon mutation leads to cancer as it disturbs the normal programmed cell death process or apoptosis. The proteins formed by the oncogenes are the major target for cancer drugs.
