Chapter 1, Problem 1.12CP
A solid aluminum disk (SG = 2.7) is 2 in in diameter and 3/1 ft in thick. It slides steadily down a 14° incline that is coated with a castor oil (SG = 0.96) film one hundredth of an inch thick. The steady slide velocity is 2 cm/s. Using Figure A.1 and a linear oil velocity profile assumption, estimate the temperature of the castor oil.

A large plate is pulled at a constant speed of U = 4 m/s over a fixed plate on 5-mm-thick engine oil film at 20°C. Assuming a half-parabolic velocity profile in the oil film, as sketched, determine the shear stress developed on the upper plate and its direction. What would happen if a linear velocity profile were assumed?
A cylinder of mass m slides down from rest in a vertical tube whose inner surface is covered by a viscous oil of film thickness h. If the diameter and height of the cylinder are D and L, respectively, derive an expression for the velocity of the cylinder as a function of time, t. Discuss what will happen as t → ∞. Can this device serve as a viscometer?
Calculate the power required per meter of width of stream to force lubricating oil through the gap between two horizontal flat plates under the following conditions:
Distance between plates, 6 mm
Flow rate of oil per meter of width, 100 m3h
Viscosity of oil, 25 cP
Density of oil, 0.88 g/cm3
Length of plates, 3 m
Assume that the plates are very wide in comparison with the distance between them and that end effects can be neglected.
