The general energy balance equation given in equation 1.59 is:

Here, ua and ub are the entering and exiting velocities of the system respectively, Za and Zb are the initial and final height of the system, Ha and Hb are the initial and final enthalpy of the system, Q is the heat of the system, Ws is the shaft work, gc is the acceleration due to gravity, and J is the mechanical equivalent of heat.

The simpler energy balance equation is:
