The English perfected the longbow as a weapon after the Medieval period. In the hands of a skilled archer, the longbow was reputed to be accurate at ranges to 100 m or more. If the maximum altitude of an arrow is less than h = 10 m while traveling to a target 100 m away from the archer, and neglecting air resistance, estimate the speed and angle at which the arrow must leave the bow. Plot the required release speed and angle as a function of height h.

- 1.) A Pelton wheel with a needle-controlled nozzle develops 1 050 kW against a gross head of 300 m. The loss of head due to friction in the pipeline and the nozzle is 60 xV. where is the flow rate in m³/s. Assuming that the overall efficiency of the wheel remains constant at 83%, determine the percentage reduction in flow rate required when the power developed is reduced to 710 kW by closing a valve on the pipeline partially.arrow_forwardIn Rizal province, one of its power plants has been thoroughly monitored for possible conversion into a wind power plant. A propeller wind turbine is to be used. Survey showed that Rizal Province at a height of 10 meters above the ground has a minimum wind speed of 7.1 miles per hour duringthe month of June and a maximum wind speed of 12.9 miles per hour during the month of January. The minimum temperature is at 75 degree Fahrenheit during the month of January and maximum temperature is at 89 degree Fahrenheit during the month of May. The existing power plant has an output of 54MW. For the proposed wind power, the power coefficient of turbine is 35% and the generator efficiency is 95%. Theimpeller diameter is assumed not to exceed 90m. Determine the following:a. Theoretical Wind Power Outputb. Electrical Power Outputc. Number of turbines to be installedarrow_forwardThe power generated by a wind turbine is proportional to the cube of the wind velocity. Inspired by the acceleration of a fluid in a nozzle, someone proposes to install a reducer casing to capture the wind energy from a larger area and accelerate it before the wind strikes the turbine blades. Evaluate if the proposed modification should be given a consideration in the design of new wind turbines.arrow_forward
- The average wind speed at a proposed HAWT wind farm site is 12.5 m/s. The power coefficient of each wind turbine is predicted to be 0.41, and the combined efficiency of the gearbox and generator is 92 percent. Each wind turbine must produce 2.5 MW of electrical power when the wind blows at 12.5 m/s. (a) Calculate the required diameter of each turbine disk. Take the average air density to be ? = 1.2 kg/m3 . (b) If 30 such turbines are built on the site and an average home in the area consumes approximately 1.5 kW of electrical power, estimate how many homes can be powered by this wind farm, assuming an additional efficiency of 96 percent to account for the powerline losses.arrow_forwardWater at 20°C is pumped at a constant rate of 9 m3/h from a large reservoir resting on the floor to the open top of an experimental absorption tower. The point of discharge is 5 m above the floor, and friction losses in the 50-mm pipe from the reservoir to the tower amount to 2.5 J/kg. At what height in the reservoir must the water level be kept if the pump can deliver only 0.1 kW?Determine the average velocity of the water at the starting point (on the surface of the reservoir)arrow_forwardA helicopter with an unloaded mass of 10000 kg takes off from sea level with a load. The wings rotate at 400 rpm without load. The horizontal wings on the helicopter allow an air mass of 15 m diameter to move downward at an average speed in proportion to the rotation speed. The helicopter was loaded with 15000 kg payload and the helicopter took off slowly. a) The volumetric flow rate of the downward air flow created by the helicopter while taking off without load and the required power b) When the helicopter takes off with a load of 15000 kg, find the speed and power of the wings to rotate. The density of the air in atmospheric conditions can be taken as 1.18 kg / m3. It is accepted that the air approaches the wings from above in a large area and with negligible speed, and is moved downward by the wings at a uniform speed from the imaginary cylinder, which has a base area equal to the wing span.arrow_forward
- A ski lift has a one-way length of 1 km and a vertical rise of 200 m. The chairs are spaced 20 m apart, and each chair can seat three people. The lift is operating at a steady speed of 10 km/h. Neglecting friction and air drag and assuming that the average mass of each loaded chair is 250 kg, determine the power required to operate this ski lift. Also estimate the power required to accelerate this ski lift in 5 s to its operating speed when it is first turned on.arrow_forwardCommercially available large wind turbines have blade span diameters as large as 100 m and generate over 3 MW of electric power at peak design conditions. Consider a wind turbine with a 90 m blade span subjected to 25 km/h steady winds. If the combined turbine generator efficiency of the wind turbine is 32 percent, determine(a) The power generated by the turbine.(b) The horizontal force exerted by the wind on the supporting mast of the turbine.Take the density of air to be 1.2 kg/m3and disregard frictional effects.arrow_forwardWater at 20°C is pumped at a constant rate of 9 m3/h from a large reservoir resting on the floor to the open top of an experimental absorption tower. The point of discharge is 5 m above the floor, and friction losses in the 50-mm pipe from the reservoir to the tower amount to 2.5 J/kg. At what height in the reservoir must the water level be kept if the pump can deliver only 0.1 kW?The pump is said to be rated at 0.1 kW or 0.1 kJ/s. How much shat work (in J/kg) is being supplied by the pump?arrow_forward
