Chapter 1, Problem 1.37CRP

Results of a 2013 Adobe Systems study on retail apps and buying habits reveals insights on perceptions and attitudes toward mobile shopping using retail apps and browsers, providing new direction for retailers to develop their digital publishing strategies. Increased consumer interest in using shopping applications means retailers must adapt to meet the rising expectations for specialized mobile shopping experiences. The results indicate that tablet users (55%) are almost twice as likely as smartphone users (28%) to use their device to purchase products and services. The findings also reveal that retail and catalog apps are rapidly catching up to mobile browsers as a viable shopping channel: Nearly half of all mobile shoppers are interested in using apps instead of a mobile browser (45% of tablet shoppers and 49% of smartphone shoppers). The research is based on an online survey with a sample of 1,003 18–54 year olds who currently own a smartphone and/or tablet; it includes consumers who use and do not use these devices to shop (adobe.ly/11gt8Rq).

  1. Describe the population of interest.
  2. Describe the sample that was collected.
  3. Describe a parameter of interest.
  4. Describe the statistic used to estimate the parameter in (c).

Government economic studies reveal that young adults, not middle-aged or older adults, are having the most difficult time in today’s economy. Although the nation’s labor market shows a decline in the unemployment rate, the percentage of young adults, ages 18 to 24, currently employed (54 percent) is at the lowest level since the government data collection began in 1948. If you were working for a national survey organization doing a general public survey of young adults and older adults, what topics and questions would you design into your survey to elaborate on this finding?
Social media provides an enormous amount of data about the activities and habits of people using social platforms like Face book and Twitter. The belief is that mining that data provides a treasure trove for those who seek to quantify and predict future human behavior. A marketer is planning a survey of Internet users in the United States to determine social media usage. The objective of the survey is to gain insight on these three items: key social media platforms used, frequency of social media usage, and demographics of key social media platform users. a. For each of the three items listed, indicate whether the variables are categorical or numerical. If a variable is numerical, is it dis crete or continuous? b. Develop five categorical questions for the survey. c. Develop five numerical questions for the survey.
Many research studies have been conducted to examine how different organizations are on implementing knowledge management processes. For example, studies have proved that larger firms have more resources to utilize, and so they have taken more efforts to implement knowledge management processes. The Journal of Business Research (Aug. 2014) published a study discussing the relationship between knowledge management processes and organizational performance. The table below shows the percentage of different size of firms participated in the study. These firms have been classified in terms of number of employees working. Need step-by-step procedure to answer each question. Randomly select one of the participated company from this study. Let x be the number of employees working in the company. Write the probability distribution of this x. What is the probability that the selected company employs more than 50 employees? Find E(x) and σ. Interpret the result.
